Elon Musk once envisioned a future where Tesla’s solar tiles would become a common sight on rooftops across the country, promising a significant leap forward in renewable energy technology. However, nearly a decade after their introduction, this ambitious dream has not materialized as expected.

Initially showcased on the set of “Desperate Housewives,” Musk’s solar tiles were touted as a revolutionary product that would cover rooftops like traditional shingles. Musk confidently projected that Tesla would be installing these solar tiles on 1,000 roofs each week by 2020. Fast forward to 2022, and the reality was starkly different—only about 3,000 solar roofs had been installed, accounting for a mere 0.17% of the residential solar capacity in the United States that year.

Now, as reported by Julian Spector and Dan McCarthy, Tesla has decided to phase out its solar shingles. Instead, the company is shifting its focus back to traditional solar panels, with plans to construct a $10.1 billion solar cell factory in Texas. This facility is expected to produce an impressive 100 GW of integrated solar panels annually.

If Tesla succeeds in this endeavor, it would be a monumental achievement. Currently, the combined output of all solar factories in the U.S. is a mere 65 GW of panels per year. To reach its ambitious target, Tesla will need to significantly ramp up its production capabilities.
