Prysmian Group, a dominant force in the realm of energy and digital connectivity, is set to bolster its U.S. operations with a substantial investment exceeding $1 billion. This financial injection is aimed at enhancing facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, reflecting the company’s ambition to significantly ramp up its optical fiber capabilities.
The strategic investment aligns with Prysmian’s broader commitment to amplify domestic optical cable and fiber production, part of a global initiative to double capacity. This endeavor is anticipated to generate 600 new jobs within the U.S. Recently, Prysmian cemented a substantial €5.5 billion ($6.29 billion) agreement with Molex, a Koch Inc. subsidiary, to supply optical cables for data centers (source).
A significant portion of this investment, over $1 billion, will be allocated to the Claremont, North Carolina campus. This will result in the doubling of its fiber manufacturing facility and expansion of its optical cable plant. Meanwhile, the Jackson, Tennessee facility will receive a $100 million boost to double its optical cable capacity, and Lexington, South Carolina will see an $80 million investment to augment its optical cable operations.
Andrea Pirondini, CEO of Prysmian North America, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This investment demonstrates our commitment to supporting the growth of the U.S. demand for advanced digital solutions. We are one of just three U.S. manufacturers of fiber and optical cables, and now we are committing more than a billion dollars to new innovative solutions and transformational capacity growth.”
Investment Breakdown by State
North Carolina is set to benefit from two major investments in Claremont:
- Claremont Fiber Operations Plant: A $1.02 billion investment will more than double fiber optic production, creating 300 jobs.
- Claremont Cable Operations Plant: An additional $48 million will enhance optical cable manufacturing, adding 85 jobs.
In Tennessee, Prysmian’s Jackson facility will undergo a $100 million expansion, creating 100 jobs to boost production of optical fiber cables. South Carolina’s Lexington facility will see an $80 million investment, creating 130 jobs by 2030, as it expands its FlexRibbon™ fiber optic cable production.
This expansion is part of Prysmian’s effort to strengthen its presence in the data center market, where there is increasing demand for high-performance digital and energy connection solutions. The expansion into the “inside” data center space will bring Prysmian’s high-quality fiber and cable offerings closer to data processing and delivery hubs.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein commented on the investment, highlighting the state’s role in innovation and job creation: “This billion-dollar investment is more proof that North Carolina is leading the way on innovation and job creation. Companies understand the value of our highly skilled manufacturing workforce that helps to power their strategic growth.”
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster expressed satisfaction with Prysmian’s continued investment: “Prysmian has been a valued part of South Carolina’s manufacturing industry, and we are pleased to see the company continue to invest in our state. This expansion will bring approximately 135 new jobs to Lexington County and create new opportunities for South Carolinians.”
Similarly, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee noted the positive impact on local employment: “Global companies like Prysmian continue to choose Tennessee because of our strong business climate and highly skilled workforce. Today’s announcement means 100 new job opportunities for Tennesseans in Madison County, and I’m grateful for Prysmian’s continued investment in our state and the lasting impact it will have on this community.”
