The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the Japan Wind Power Association (JWPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost offshore wind development in Japan.
The agreement sets a framework for collaboration to promote knowledge exchange, enhance industry networks, and support sustainable growth in Japan’s offshore wind sector.
The partnership aims to leverage global expertise to boost Japan’s offshore wind industry competitiveness. Under the MoU, the organizations will work to facilitate business interactions through networking and trade shows, promote member engagement, and host capacity-building programs.
The collaboration includes joint publications on policy enablers like finance, supply chain development, and regional carbon market integration, as well as event support and information exchange.
GWEC and JWPA will engage in ongoing dialogue to share best practices on offshore wind policy and regulatory frameworks, including harmonized standards in the Asia-Pacific region.
“This MOU with GWEC aligns Japan’s offshore wind industry with global developments, strengthening supply chains and improving the policy environment,” said Masaru Akiyoshi, JWPA President.
Japan targets 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 30-45 GW by 2040, including floating wind, as part of its net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
Earlier this year, Japan launched its first commercial floating wind farm and largest offshore wind farm.
“Japan is a key market in the Asia-Pacific region. Through this partnership, we will share global best practices to support offshore wind growth in Japan,” said Rebecca Williams, Deputy CEO of GWEC.
