Micronesia and Türkiye: A Strengthened Diplomatic Bond

In a significant diplomatic step, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Republic of Türkiye have emphasized their commitment to fostering a robust bilateral relationship. On February 6, 2026, President Wesley W. Simina of FSM received the Letters of Credence from Türkiye’s new Ambassador, H.E. Oğuzhan Ertuğrul, in a ceremony held at the President’s Office in Palikir.

The event saw participation from Vice President Aren B. Palik, members of the President’s Cabinet, and diplomatic representatives, marking the importance of this diplomatic exchange.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Ertuğrul presented his credentials to President Simina, who expressed FSM’s dedication to enhancing ties with Türkiye. The Ambassador relayed greetings from Türkiye’s leadership and stressed collaboration in areas such as climate change, environmental protection, energy security, and food security.

Following the credentials presentation, a courtesy meeting took place, where both leaders reiterated the steady growth of FSM-Türkiye relations. Ambassador Ertuğrul highlighted Türkiye’s consistent efforts to deepen these ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The dialogue covered shared priorities like tackling global challenges, with a focus on climate change, environmental protection, energy security, and food security. Ambassador Ertuğrul shared Türkiye’s preparations for hosting COP31, aiming for practical outcomes to advance global climate initiatives.

Further discussions explored trade, tourism, and infrastructure development. Both parties considered exchanging best practices to boost tourism and stressed the role of aviation cooperation. Ambassador Ertuğrul noted Türkiye’s openness to FSM’s infrastructure proposals for potential Turkish company involvement, and readiness to discuss civil aviation cooperation.

On multilateral fronts, both nations discussed ongoing collaboration within the United Nations. President Simina sought Türkiye’s support for FSM’s ONE UN House initiative to enhance the UN’s presence in the North Pacific. He also acknowledged the importance of international partnerships, expressing FSM’s keen interest in engaging in the upcoming Pre-COP meeting in the Pacific region.

The potential appointment of Honorary Consuls in both countries was considered to further bilateral interactions.

President Simina expressed gratitude for Ambassador Ertuğrul’s visit and reaffirmed FSM’s commitment to strengthening ties with Türkiye through ongoing dialogue and cooperation in regional and multilateral arenas.
