BYD’s European Expansion: Redefining the Global Automotive Industry

BYD leads global EV sales, outpacing Western brands. Their advanced vehicles challenge old biases about Chinese cars.
Western Journalists Still Don’t Understand BYD

In a rapidly evolving automotive industry where electric vehicles are leading the charge, BYD has emerged as a formidable player on the global stage. As of 2025, BYD stands as China’s largest carmaker, surpassing all others in the sale of plug-in vehicles worldwide. This shift in the automotive landscape challenges long-held perceptions, especially among Western audiences who have traditionally viewed Chinese carmakers with skepticism.

Despite BYD’s significant advancements, some Western journalists remain dismissive, clinging to outdated stereotypes that Chinese cars cannot rival Western brands. However, BYD’s robust research and development team, comprising over 100,000 engineers, is a testament to its capability and ambition in the electric vehicle sector.

For those who have yet to experience the innovations of BYD, there is still an opportunity to explore their offerings, particularly in Europe where test drives are available to challenge these biases.

Reflecting on my own experience, my initial skepticism towards Chinese cars has been dispelled through firsthand exposure. One standout model, the Zeekr 7X, which I drove at its launch in Portugal, impressed me with its luxurious feel and superior engineering. Its features, rivaling those of Western brands like BMW, underscore the quality and innovation present in today’s Chinese vehicles.

Another model that caught my attention was BYD’s Dolphin Surf, also known as the Seagull in different markets. This subcompact EV offers a dynamic driving experience and affordability, making it a potential hit in Europe.

BYD’s ambition is evident in its expansion into the European market. The BYD Seal, for instance, exemplifies the brand’s prowess. During an extensive road trip through Europe, the Seal’s performance and build quality left a lasting impression, rivaling that of established Western models such as the Audi A6 e-tron and BMW i4 M50.

Entering the European market in late 2023, the Seal has been pivotal in BYD’s strategy. August sales figures reveal that BYD outsold Tesla in Europe, a testament to its growing presence and appeal. The Seal’s adoption by both private owners and ride-hailing services further cements its position as a competitive offering.

My initial encounter with a BYD vehicle as a passenger in a Stuttgart Uber ride revealed the brand’s understated yet impactful design. Since then, the Seal has proven itself as a serious contender among electric sedans, offering exceptional value and quality.

BYD’s momentum in Europe is part of a broader trend of Chinese automakers disrupting traditional markets. With a 300% increase in European sales in 2025’s first nine months, BYD’s growth trajectory highlights the shifting dynamics in the automotive industry. As Western automakers face this new reality, it is imperative they adapt to stay competitive.
