Centrus Energy Expands in Tennessee: Significant Jobs and Investment Ahead
In a significant boost to East Tennessee’s economic landscape, Centrus Energy is setting the stage for a major transformation at its Oak Ridge facility. The company has unveiled plans to transition this site into a high-rate manufacturing hub, an initiative anticipated to generate nearly 430 new jobs and involve an investment exceeding $560 million in Anderson County over the forthcoming years.
Amir Vexler, the President and CEO of Centrus Energy, expressed pride in leading the charge to reinstate the U.S.’s large-scale uranium enrichment capabilities, emphasizing the use of American technology and workforce. “These advanced centrifuges are essential to meeting America’s energy security and national security requirements. We are honored to be a part of the vibrant ecosystem of nuclear energy leaders in East Tennessee and grateful for the strong support of federal, state and local leaders here.”
This expansion aligns with Centrus’ broader strategy to enhance its uranium enrichment plant in Ohio. The first batch of centrifuges manufactured in Tennessee is projected to become operational in Ohio by 2029.
The Oak Ridge site stands as the sole uranium enrichment centrifuge manufacturing facility in the U.S. Recently, Centrus secured funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to bolster its Ohio plant with Tennessee-produced centrifuges.
Governor Bill Lee commended the development, stating, “Companies nationwide recognize that Tennessee is the nation’s epicenter for new nuclear, and I am grateful for Centrus’ continued investment in the Volunteer State. These 400 new jobs will create greater opportunity for Tennesseans and advance our state’s position as a leader in energy independence.”
Centrus is among the companies benefiting from Tennessee’s Nuclear Energy Fund, a $70 million initiative funded through allocations in recent state budgets.
Deputy Governor and Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter highlighted the state’s leadership in clean energy, saying, “Through strategic investments from our state’s Nuclear Energy Fund, we are strengthening Tennessee’s nuclear infrastructure and advancing the technology and education needed to support it. We appreciate Centrus’ commitment to the next generation of clean energy and look forward to the positive impact this investment will bring to our state.”
Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank lauded Centrus’ role in the community, noting, “Centrus has been an outstanding corporate citizen, and its continued growth reflects both the long-term stability of Anderson County and the unmatched advantages of doing business in the Oak Ridge Corridor. This announcement is a powerful statement of confidence in our community, our people, our work ethic and the strength of our partnerships across local, state and federal levels.”
