Citizen Science’s Role in UK Biodiversity Monitoring: An In-Depth Look

As the pressure mounts on our environment, the need for effective and widespread monitoring becomes more critical. Citizen science has emerged as a crucial tool in this endeavor, drawing attention to the demographics of those involved and the recognition they receive for their contributions. The United Kingdom, known for its long-standing tradition of ecological citizen science, serves as a significant case study. A recent study explored this landscape through a detailed examination of 165 ecological citizen science projects and interviews with 14 women participants, revealing the intricacies of participation and recognition within these projects.

Ecological Citizen Science: Tradition and Modern Practice

The UK boasts a rich history of amateur natural history and biological recording, dating back over a century. This tradition has laid the foundation for today’s citizen science initiatives, which involve the public in various scientific processes, including data collection and analysis. These efforts have evolved into structured national recording schemes and biodiversity monitoring programs, which are integral to informing conservation policies and practices. Notably, volunteer efforts in biodiversity recording contribute over £20 million annually in in-kind efforts alone.

The diversity and scope of these projects are vast, ranging from national monitoring schemes to community-led initiatives. However, a significant concentration exists among established organizations, such as the Biological Records Centre and the National Biodiversity Network, which together host millions of species occurrence records.

Participation Patterns and Gender Dynamics

The study found that participation in ecological citizen science is predominantly organized around contributory models, where participants primarily collect data, with fewer opportunities for deeper involvement in project design or decision-making. Women participants often engage in roles beyond data collection, such as mentoring and volunteer coordination, which are crucial for project continuity but are less recognized than scientific contributions.

Interviews with women volunteers revealed that their participation is influenced by organizational cultures and digital platforms, impacting their access to specialist roles and recognition. The study highlights that while women contribute significantly, their roles often extend into informal pathways, shaped by life circumstances and organizational support.

Interestingly, ecological citizen science projects tend to focus on more visible taxa like birds and mammals, while less visible groups, such as fungi and algae, receive less attention. This bias affects what environmental knowledge becomes visible and prioritized.

Conceptual Framework and Recommendations

This research proposes a conceptual framework of gendered citizen science infrastructures, linking the organization of citizen science with women’s participation pathways. It suggests that institutional arrangements, recognition practices, and ecological priorities interact to determine which forms of expertise and knowledge are acknowledged and valued.

To enhance recognition and inclusion in citizen science, the study recommends adjusting project designs to better align with volunteer contributions, creating clear pathways into scientific and leadership roles, and ensuring digital platforms are user-friendly and supportive. These changes could foster a more inclusive environment, recognizing the full spectrum of volunteer contributions and enhancing the sustainability of citizen science efforts.
