Volkswagen Reaches Significant Milestone with Electric Vehicles
Volkswagen has achieved a significant milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) efforts, delivering its 2 millionth fully electric car. This milestone was reached with the delivery of a Volkswagen ID.3, manufactured at the Zwickau plant, and presented to a customer at the Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany.
While companies like BYD and Tesla have been reaching high sales volumes—BYD surpassing 2 million electric vehicles in a single year and Tesla nearing that figure at its peak—Volkswagen joins a select group of brands with 2 million cumulative EV sales.
Volkswagen has highlighted its leadership in Europe’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) market. “Volkswagen has assumed a leading role in the European BEV market with its broad range from the compact ID.3 to the long-distance capable ID.7,” a Volkswagen statement reads. Martin Sander, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales, further emphasizes, “Two million all-electric vehicles provide clear evidence of the attractiveness and competitiveness of our all-electric portfolio.”
Volkswagen’s journey in the EV sector began in 2013 with the release of the e-up!. Over the years, it has expanded its range to include the ID. family and earlier models like the e-Golf. Reflecting on this journey, Volkswagen acknowledges its progress while looking forward to accelerating future sales.

Volkswagen’s strong presence in the EV market is evident. The company claims it holds a leading position in Germany and Europe, ranking among the largest electric car manufacturers globally. Sander notes, “We laid the foundations for electromobility early on and are driving our transformation to an all-electric future with clear strategic priority.”
The brand’s success is largely attributed to three models:
- ID.3 (approx. 628,000 vehicles delivered): The ID.3 marked Volkswagen’s entry into the era of electromobility, offering all-electric mobility to a wide range of customers in the compact class.
- ID.4 (approx. 901,000 vehicles delivered*): As a key growth driver, the ID.4 has significantly contributed to Volkswagen’s footprint in global BEV markets, especially in China and the United States.
- ID.7 (approx. 132,000 vehicles delivered): Expanding in 2023, the ID.7 includes an all-electric saloon and an estate option, enhancing the brand’s presence in the upper mid-range segment.
With these models alone, Volkswagen has delivered over 1.6 million vehicles. Looking ahead, Volkswagen plans to introduce a more affordable mass-market EV, the ID. Polo, along with four new electric models in the small and compact segments by 2026. “These new models make electromobility accessible to even more customers,” Sander states, emphasizing their strategy to offer attractive, affordable EVs.
