BMW and MINI Revamp Electric Vehicle Charging Experience with New Features
As electric vehicles become more prevalent, convenient charging solutions are critical for enhancing the everyday usability of these cars. Just in time for the upcoming holiday season, BMW and MINI are expanding their electric mobility offerings to ensure peace of mind for those embarking on long journeys. With new app functionalities, improved price transparency, and a growing charging network, BMW/MINI Charging is poised to make electric vehicle travel more accessible and convenient.
Increased Price Transparency through Innovative App Features
Electric vehicle owners often face challenges with price transparency at public charging stations, unlike the straightforward pricing at traditional fuel pumps. The My BMW App and the MINI App address this issue by providing a comprehensive overview of available charging stations, including their pricing and capacities. This feature is also accessible in-car for BMW models with Operating System 8.5 or later and the latest MINI vehicles.
The apps allow users to view all tariffs saved in their Charging Wallet, alongside any ad-hoc tariffs provided by local operators. This enables users to select the most cost-effective charging option with enhanced transparency.
Real-Time Cost Monitoring During Charging
BMW is introducing a new feature for Neue Klasse models that allows real-time tracking of energy consumption and costs during charging. Similar to a traditional fuel pump, the vehicle display and app show the price per kilowatt-hour and the total cost as energy is added. This feature provides users with full cost control and is available in BMW Neue Klasse vehicles with BMW Operating System X.
Expansion of the BMW Group Charging Network
The BMW Group is committed to expanding the public charging infrastructure to support the growth of electric mobility. Through the IONITY joint venture, the network has grown to 3.1 million charging points globally, up by 300,000 since December 2025. In Europe, the network expanded by 100,000 charging points to a total of 1.1 million, with Germany alone adding 20,000 points.
Preferred Partner Network and Route Optimization
BMW/MINI Charging customers can benefit from reduced rates through the Preferred Partner Network, which offers discounted tariffs with select premium providers across Europe. Additionally, the BMW Maps and MINI Navigation systems allow for easy journey planning by calculating routes optimized for charging. These systems can customize charging preferences and provide detailed information on charging stops, including estimated durations and costs.
As the vehicle nears a scheduled charging stop, the system frequently checks the availability of the selected station, ensuring that alternative routes can be identified if necessary. Battery preconditioning is also an option, automatically optimizing charging performance at fast-charging stations.
