The agreement aims to facilitate future strategic subsea transmission projects, such as the planned Shetland 2 HVDC link. This project is pivotal for Sumitomo Electric’s new cable manufacturing plant at Nigg in the Highlands.

The collaboration combines Sumitomo Electric’s HVDC cable expertise with Van Oord’s offshore installation capabilities. This partnership is crucial for the UK’s transition to a cleaner energy system.

“The Framework Agreement is a significant step for Van Oord in the offshore HVDC market and begins a long-term collaboration with Sumitomo Electric. Our commitment to the UK is reflected in our century-long involvement here,” said Maurits den Broeder, Managing Director Offshore Energy at Van Oord.

Through this agreement, Scotland aims to establish itself as a leader in subsea transmission infrastructure. The demand for future transmission projects has spurred Sumitomo Electric’s investment in cable manufacturing at Nigg, creating economic opportunities in the Highlands, according to SSEN Transmission.

Sumitomo’s Nigg investment exemplifies the economic benefits of long-term electricity system planning, fostering supply chain investment and job creation.

“This Framework Agreement signifies a milestone in our partnership with SSEN Transmission. Our Port of Nigg factory and EPC projects Centre of Excellence in Glasgow reflect our commitment to local engineering, skilled job creation, and resilient supply chains,” stated Masaki Shirayama, Managing Director of Sumitomo Electric.
