As the 2026 American Solar Challenge approaches, universities worldwide are gearing up for what promises to be an extraordinary event. With a record 42 teams set to participate, this year’s Formula Sun Grand Prix pre-qualifier has attracted attention from colleges in the US, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This surge in participation highlights the growing interest in solar-powered innovation and engineering.
The Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP) serves as more than just a competitive event; it is a crucial stepping stone for teams aiming to prove their solar vehicles are ready for the 1,500+ mile journey across the United States in the renowned American Solar Challenge. This race offers students a platform to showcase their engineering prowess and the viability of solar technology in long-distance travel.
A Rich Legacy of Solar Racing
The history of solar car racing in the United States dates back to 1987, when GM’s Sunraycer took the world by storm by winning the inaugural World Solar Challenge in Australia. This remarkable vehicle, with its futuristic design and 8,800 solar cells, demonstrated the potential of electric drivetrains. Inspired by this success, GM initiated the Sunrayce USA events in the 1990s, although they were eventually discontinued.
Fast forward to 2001, the American Solar Challenge (ASC) was introduced, taking the baton from Sunrayce USA. The Innovators Educational Foundation (IEF) now oversees this event and its pre-qualifier, the FSGP. The ASC occurs biennially, with the FSGP serving as a qualifier in off years. This structure ensures that participating vehicles are capable of long-distance travel while offering new teams a chance to gain experience.
With Electrek’s five-year title sponsorship deal announced in 2023, the future of the FSGP and ASC is secure through 2028. The 2026 edition sees support from industry giants like Blue Origin, Tesla, and SpaceX, among others.
Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix 2026
This year’s Electrek FSGP is set to make history at the Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota. Renowned for its professional racing events, the 3.1-mile course features sweeping turns and a lengthy, wide front straight. The track offers a less challenging terrain than previous locations, promising an exciting race with more opportunities for overtaking.
Scheduled for July 21-23, the event is open to the public and free of charge. Attendees can witness these innovative solar cars in action, with only a waiver required at the entrance.
Electrek American Solar Challenge 2026 Main Event
The main event kicks off after the FSGP, challenging teams to a grueling 1,500+ mile journey from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Amarillo, Texas. The route, which includes sections of the Great River Road and Historic Route 66, coincides with the latter’s 100th anniversary, adding historical significance to the challenge.
Event director Gail Lueck expressed her enthusiasm, stating she’s “thrilled” for students to traverse the iconic Route 66, marking a quarter-century since solar cars first ventured down this historic path. The competition spans eight days, with several checkpoints and stage stops where participants showcase their vehicles and engage with the public.
Teams compete in either the Single-Occupant Vehicle (SOV) class for efficiency or the Multi-Occupant Vehicle (MOV) class for a balance of performance and practicality. Success is measured by total miles covered, with additional credit for passenger miles in the MOV class.
The adventure begins with a free public Display Day on July 24 at the University of Minnesota, with the race commencing on July 25 and concluding in Amarillo on August 1.
