Electricity from the Baltic Power offshore wind farm has been integrated into Poland’s national power grid, marking a significant development as offshore wind energy joins the country’s energy mix for the first time.
54 out of 76 turbines have been installed at Poland’s first offshore wind farm, with the first turbine now generating electricity. The construction is scheduled to be completed this autumn, according to project owners ORLEN and Northland Power.
”ORLEN is executing the largest investment programme in Poland’s energy sector history, with total spending expected to reach PLN 380 billion,” said Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO of ORLEN. ”Offshore work began in early 2025, and the first electricity is already feeding into the grid. This ambitious project aims to enhance energy security and support low prices. Baltic Power will operate for decades, fostering domestic supply chains and boosting Poland’s economy beyond megawatts.”
The First Power milestone indicates that the initial turbine has started generating electricity, and the wind farm is entering a phased commissioning process.
”Today marks a historic moment as the first offshore wind-generated electricity reaches Polish homes and businesses,” said Christine Healy, CEO of Northland Power. ”Together with ORLEN, we are strengthening Poland’s energy system for future generations.”
In the coming weeks, additional turbines will undergo start-up and testing, with generated electricity already entering the national grid. Baltic Power is beginning to power Polish homes.
The infrastructure, including turbines, offshore and onshore substations, and control systems, is being tested. The project’s capacity will gradually increase to its target of 1.2 GW. This is a groundbreaking operation in Poland.
The installation campaign is over 22% complete, with 54 turbines erected offshore. All inter-array and export cables, totaling 350 kilometers, have been laid, and both offshore substations are in place.
All onshore infrastructure, including the Choczewo substation, is ready. Several specialized vessels are active in the project area, handling installation, testing, and acceptance of wind farm components.
The Baltic Power maintenance base in Łeba, operational since last year, supports ongoing construction and will handle the wind farm’s operation and maintenance for about 30 years, managing over 100 vessels and 5,300 personnel.
Once fully operational, the wind farm will consist of 76 turbines, each with a 15 MW capacity, totaling around 1.2 GW. Baltic Power will generate approximately 4 TWh annually, covering about 3% of Poland’s electricity demand, equivalent to the needs of over 1.5 million households.
Covering 130 square kilometers and located 23 kilometers offshore near Choczewo and Łeba, the project employs some of the world’s largest turbines, with nacelles made in Poland. Electricity from Baltic Power is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 2.8 million tonnes annually compared to conventional power.
As commissioning progresses, infrastructure inspections, performance tests, and certification by an independent auditor will be completed. These procedures are the first of their kind in Poland. Once construction is finished, an electricity generation licence from the Energy Regulatory Office will be sought.
