Opel and Leapmotor Collaborate on New C-Segment SUV with Electric Tech

The Leapmotor B10 will soon be produced at Stellantis' Zaragoza plant alongside e-CMP models, previewing Opel's SUV.
Opel develops battery-electric SUV with Leapmotor technology

The production of the Leapmotor B10 at Stellantis’ Zaragoza plant is set to commence in the second half of this year. This move will see the B10 produced alongside other compact models based on the e-CMP platform. The B10, measuring 4.51 meters, fits well within the compact-class segment, which usually ranges from 4.20 to 4.60 meters. Opel has announced a ‘new C Segment SUV,’ hinting at the B10 as a precursor to its upcoming SUV.

Opel expressed that the new vehicle is designed as a “blueprint for efficient global collaboration [between Stellantis and Leapmotor],” aiming to advance electrification and scaling quickly. This model is anticipated to be the first outcome of an expanded partnership, with future Opel models potentially integrating Leapmotor technology.

The Opel SUV will incorporate ‘core components’ from Leapmotor, such as the latest electric architecture and battery technology. Expected battery options include LFP batteries with 56.2 and 67.1 kWh capacities, the latter supporting up to 168 kW charging. However, the B10 does not feature battery preconditioning, which could affect performance in colder climates. Its powertrain delivers a maximum of 160 kW, offering a WLTP range of up to 434 kilometers. Despite these limitations, the B10 was praised for its equipment and pricing during a test drive review, priced between €29,990 and €33,990.

Opel’s Design and Development Strategy

Opel CEO Florian Huettl mentioned that while the new model will be designed at the Rüsselsheim headquarters, development will involve international teams in Germany and China. “The partnership with Leapmotor should enable a development time of less than two years,” Huettl stated, indicating a swift move towards advanced electric vehicle offerings.

The new Opel model will exhibit distinctive features such as the brand’s signature design, along with specialized chassis, lighting, seating technology, and a tailored user interface. Whether the model will retain the Leapmotor’s minimalist interior with a large touchscreen or adopt the typical Opel cockpit remains undecided.

This joint venture between Stellantis and Leapmotor has recently been affirmed, following speculation from last year about Opel utilizing Leapmotor technology. By April 2026, the Leapmotor B10 was confirmed as the base for Opel’s SUV to be produced in Zaragoza.

Rumors have also alluded to other Stellantis brands like Fiat and Peugeot potentially adopting Leapmotor technology, though no confirmations have been made. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa is expected to reveal a new strategy at an investor day later this May, which may clarify these speculations.

Recent reports suggest Stellantis may focus on four core brands: Jeep and Ram in North America, Fiat for compact cars, and Peugeot as a versatile brand in Europe. The role of other brands in using Leapmotor models remains unclear. For now, Opel is positioned as a key partner in this collaboration, set to bolster its role in value and electrification.

Feasibility studies and development work are ongoing within existing agreements, with discussions for a broader industrial partnership still in progress. Xavier Chéreau, Chairman of the Opel supervisory board, stated, “With this project, Opel would bring together German engineering excellence with global technological innovation speed,” highlighting the innovative spirit driving the collaboration with Leapmotor.
