Los Angeles Mayoral Candidates Discuss Environmental Challenges and Plans

As Los Angeles prepares for its upcoming general election, the city’s environmental future was a key topic at a recent candidate forum. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman presented their visions for tackling the city’s pressing environmental issues during a session moderated by LAist’s Erin Stone.

The event, organized by various environmental groups including the L.A. League of Conservation Voters, SCOPE-LA, and others, provided a platform for the candidates to outline their plans on issues like emergency preparedness, water resilience, and transportation policies amidst ongoing climate challenges.

Contrasting Perspectives on Environmental Progress

Mayor Bass, who assumed office in 2022, highlighted advancements made under her leadership, such as transitioning away from coal energy and expanding clean-energy jobs. She emphasized the importance of environmental justice, focusing on communities disproportionately affected by pollution, like those in South L.A. and near the Lineage warehouse.

Conversely, Councilmember Raman criticized the pace of progress, stating, “Too much of that work remains unfinished,” and advocated for increased funding and staffing for environmental programs. She specifically pointed to Bass’ budget cuts affecting the Climate Emergency Mobilization Office as a setback.

Emergency Preparedness Concerns

Both candidates acknowledged the need for improved emergency response strategies, referencing the city’s handling of recent disasters like the Palisades Fire. Raman noted a lack of clear leadership in recovery efforts, while Bass attributed some challenges to jurisdictional issues between city and state lands.

The candidates agreed on the need for stronger enforcement against industrial polluters and better emergency planning for industrial areas.

Common Environmental Goals

Despite their differences, Bass and Raman share several environmental goals. They both advocate for cooling shelters for unhoused residents during heatwaves and support making utility bill rebates more accessible to low-income communities.

Additionally, both candidates aim to expand the city’s electric vehicle fleet and enhance public transit and biking infrastructure to reduce car dependency.
