Kioxia and Google Drive Clean Energy Initiative in Japan
In a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions, Kioxia Corporation has teamed up with Google LLC to increase the use of renewable electricity from a hydropower project in Japan’s Chubu region. This collaboration with the Chubu Electric Power group aims to enhance clean energy production, aligning with both companies’ goals for a net-zero future.
Kioxia, known for its expertise in memory solutions, has started utilizing its share of the electricity from this hydropower project, which is projected to generate 160 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually—enough to supply about 40,000 households in Japan. This initiative is a stride towards Kioxia’s target of 100% renewable energy utilization by fiscal year (FY) 2040 and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by FY2050. The clean energy acquisition also aids in reducing Google’s scope 3 emissions, supporting its net-zero ambitions across its operations and supply chain.
Hydropower retrofitting, which involves upgrading existing power-generation units for improved efficiency and output, offers a promising method to expand renewable energy with minimal ecological impact. For Kioxia, this project is crucial in Japan, providing a sustainable power solution in regions struggling with decarbonization.
The initiative was facilitated by Google’s efforts to introduce more affordable clean electricity solutions to manufacturers within Japan.
By focusing on the renewal of existing infrastructure, Kioxia and Google are advancing a practical method to enhance clean energy availability across Japan.
