Kia has announced a strategic shift in its U.S. electric vehicle lineup, phasing out the Niro EV by 2027 in favor of the new, more affordable EV3. The Niro, a favorite since its 2019 debut, will continue solely as a hybrid model as Kia introduces the EV3 as its budget-friendly electric offering.
Kia Discontinues Niro EV in Favor of EV3
Since hitting the market in 2019, the Kia Niro EV has been a cost-effective choice for electric vehicle enthusiasts, boasting a starting price under $40,000 and a range of 239 miles. Despite its popularity, the Niro EV will be phased out in 2027 as Kia shifts focus to newer, more technologically advanced models.
Kia’s decision was solidified with the unveiling of the 2027 Niro, which will feature a hybrid engine and updated styling, including the new ccNC infotainment system. This hybrid version is set to arrive this summer.
Introducing the 2027 Kia EV3
As the Niro EV exits, the EV3 enters the scene. This new electric SUV, which made its North American debut in April, is set to become Kia’s most affordable electric vehicle, expected to be priced under $35,000. Described as an “entry-level EV SUV that offers many of the advanced amenities of the EV9,” the EV3 combines affordability with advanced features.
The EV3 will be available in five trims—Light, Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT—and will offer two battery options. The Light trim features a 58.3-kWh battery providing up to 220 miles of range. In contrast, the Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT trims will house an 81.4 kWh battery, offering an estimated range of 320 miles for the front-wheel-drive models.
The EV3’s all-wheel drive is standard for the GT-Line and GT trims, delivering 261 hp, while the GT model offers a slightly higher output of 288 hp. Charging efficiency is a highlight, with the standard battery charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes using DC fast charging, and the larger battery completing the same in about 31 minutes.
The EV3’s interior is equipped with Kia’s latest ccNC infotainment system, featuring a panoramic display with nearly 30 inches of screen space. An optional 12-inch head-up display and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system are also available for those seeking additional luxury.
With its competitive pricing and advanced features, the Kia EV3 is well-positioned to capture a significant market share in the U.S. EV segment, aiming to replicate its success in other markets where it has emerged as a top-selling model.
