A 20 MW wind turbine was installed off the southern coast of Fujian, China, on January 13, marking the first offshore installation of such a powerful turbine globally. China Three Gorges (CTG), in partnership with Goldwind, designed and constructed the turbine as part of a research initiative.
Located over 30 kilometers offshore, the installation site features water depths exceeding 40 meters. The turbine boasts a rotor diameter of 300 meters, blades reaching 147 meters, and a hub height of 174 meters, comparable to a 58-story building. The 20 MW model is designed to produce over 80 GWh of electricity annually, sufficient for around 44,000 households, as announced by CTG on January 14.
The turbine’s lightweight design results in a unit weight below 40 tonnes per megawatt, over 20% less than the industry average. It incorporates an intelligent monitoring system with multi-dimensional perception and early safety warnings, ensuring autonomous operation in offshore scenarios through integrated LiDAR and blade root load sensors.
This installation succeeds the deployment of the world’s first 16 MW offshore wind turbine in the Pingtan waters of Fujian in 2023, another CTG and Goldwind project.
CTG, Goldwind, and Mingyang Smart Energy are in close competition in single-unit capacity installations. Mingyang installed a 16 MW offshore wind turbine prototype soon after CTG and Goldwind in 2023 and, in 2024, installed a 20 MW prototype at an onshore test site in Hainan, China.
This 20 MW turbine is part of the Renewable Energy Technology project within the National Key Research and Development Programme. It is supported by the National Energy Administration and the Fujian Provincial Development and Reform Commission, with design, construction, and demonstration by the Three Gorges Group and Goldwind Technology.
