Aptera Partners with RepairPal for Nationwide EV Service Access

Aptera is stepping up its game in the electric vehicle (EV) market by partnering with a nationwide repair network. This move ensures that future owners of its solar-powered electric cars will have access to a wide range of repair shops across the United States.

Though Aptera is a familiar name in the EV space, it has yet to deliver its first vehicle. Recently, insights from a test drive of the Aptera solar EV and a factory tour revealed promising progress, despite the challenges that lie ahead.

The company aims to launch a highly efficient, three-wheeled electric vehicle equipped with solar panels, potentially allowing users to avoid charging altogether. However, since its inception, skeptics have questioned Aptera’s ability to deliver, especially after its initial closure in 2011 and subsequent revival in 2019.

The question of where owners will get their vehicles serviced is a significant concern for EV startups. While companies like Tesla and Rivian have built in-house service networks, smaller startups like Aptera must explore alternative methods. Many startups have faced challenges in maintaining repair options post-launch, leading to various owner-driven initiatives.

To address these concerns, Aptera has announced a collaboration with RepairPal, providing access to 4,300 service shops nationwide. Although RepairPal does not own these shops, it certifies them to work on specific car models. Soon, all certified shops will be equipped with Aptera-specific service procedures. However, not all shops will handle every aspect of an Aptera vehicle, as only around 200 are certified for high-voltage EV battery work.

This partnership provides reassurance that Aptera owners will have service options, though the real test will come once the cars hit the road. Aptera’s proactive approach to securing a repair network is commendable, especially as it awaits key regulatory approvals such as the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) certification. This certification is crucial, despite the vehicle being classified as an “autocycle” with fewer safety requirements.
