Adapting to an Evolving Automotive Landscape: Horse Powertrain’s Strategic Innovations

At the opening media day of Auto China 2026 in Munich, Horse Powertrain Global CEO Matias Giannini presented a compelling vision for the future of the automotive industry. By 2040, over 1 billion vehicles with internal combustion engines are expected to remain on roads worldwide, highlighting the ongoing challenges automakers face in the transition to electric vehicles (EVs).

The path to a fully electric future is fraught with obstacles such as insufficient charging infrastructure, limited battery raw materials, and high retail prices. Automakers find themselves in a predicament, needing to invest heavily in EV platforms while hybrid vehicle demand remains robust. This dual investment is financially taxing, forcing many companies into a tight spot.

“Pure electric is not the only low-carbon solution,” Giannini emphasized to attendees. “Hybrid technology is a core solution for achieving net-zero emissions, not merely a transitional technology.”

The X-Range System: Bridging the Gap Between Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Horse Powertrain’s innovative solution is the X-Range Range Extender System, designed to enable automakers to enhance existing EV platforms with hybrid capabilities quickly. This technology allows for a seamless addition of hybrid or range-extending features without needing to redesign the platform architecture, thereby reducing costs and avoiding the difficult choice between purely electric or hybrid systems.

The X-Range system comprises three core products: the C15 ultra-compact range extender, the F15 Direct Drive hybrid system, and the newly unveiled C15 Direct Drive system. The C15 Direct Drive stands out for its ability to support a range of configurations—pure electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and range-extended—without altering the platform, allowing automakers to expand their hybrid offerings efficiently.

Giannini articulated a vision where automakers can focus on “core differentiation,” leaving powertrain module development to specialized suppliers. This model allows automakers to concentrate resources on branding and user experience, areas more directly connected with consumers.

A Comprehensive Product Matrix for Diverse Needs

Beyond the X-Range system, Horse Powertrain unveiled a wide array of technologies at the auto show. These include the Horse W30+4LDHT V6 high-performance hybrid system, characterized by a power output of 350–400 kW, and the 4LDHT longitudinal hybrid transmission, offering superior performance in challenging driving conditions. The W30 V6 system is slated for market entry in 2028.

In the efficient hybrid segment, the B20 ultra-efficient waterproof hybrid engine achieves a peak thermal efficiency of 48.41%, equating to a significant reduction in fuel consumption. The DHTS210 electric drive unit, part of the DHTS super-hybrid platform, will launch by mid-2026 and is designed to meet high safety standards while enabling large-scale manufacturing.

Horse Powertrain’s DHT290 flagship intelligent electric drive, boasting a 290 kW motor and impressive acceleration capabilities, is already integrated into models such as the ZEEKR 9X and Lotus’s global hybrid hypercar, the For Me.

Exploring Clean Energy Alternatives: Methanol and Ultra-Lean Combustion

Horse Powertrain is also advancing in low-carbon fuel technologies, showcasing methanol flexible-fuel range extenders and the “Yufeng Shunlan” ultra-lean burn gasoline engine technology. The methanol flexible-fuel extender allows for cold starts at -40°C and supports various fuel blends, offering a cost-effective alternative to gasoline.

Despite engineering challenges, such as cold starts with methanol, Horse Powertrain’s solutions demonstrate significant advancements in fuel efficiency and adaptability. The lean-burn methanol range extender and “Yufeng Shunlan” technology offer promising paths forward, though widespread commercialization may face hurdles related to infrastructure and regulations.

Specialized Powertrain Solutions: The Future of Automotive Development

Horse Powertrain’s comprehensive product offerings reveal a structural shift in the automotive supply chain. As automakers grapple with the high costs and long development cycles of powertrain technology, outsourcing to specialized vendors like Horse Powertrain becomes increasingly appealing.

The challenges of charging infrastructure, battery materials, and EV pricing, highlighted by Giannini, suggest that hybrid technology will remain vital in the automotive market for years to come. Horse Powertrain’s diverse range of solutions positions the company to meet both current and future demands, offering a pragmatic approach to achieving net-zero emissions.
