Renewable energy is becoming increasingly essential as concerns about climate change grow. As we commemorate National Renewable Energy Day on March 21, Seattle’s commitment to green energy presents a remarkable example of sustainable practices.
Seattle City Light has set a high standard for environmental responsibility, maintaining carbon neutrality for over 20 years. Delving into the significance of renewable energy in our everyday lives reveals the steps being taken to ensure a sustainable energy future.
The National Energy Context
Seattle is uniquely positioned against the national backdrop, where renewable sources account for only about 22% of electricity across the United States. The majority still depends on fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
With global energy consumption anticipated to surge by 50% by mid-century, clean, renewable energy is not just a choice but a requirement in the face of climate change’s ongoing impact.
City Light’s Renewable Energy Initiatives
The Pacific Northwest stands out with City Light providing over 77% of its power from renewable hydroelectricity.

Nearly half of this comes from the Skagit and Boundary hydroelectric projects. Additional power is sourced from the Bonneville Power Administration and other renewable avenues, supplemented by wind, biogas, and other carbon-free resources.
City Light’s core resource mix excludes coal and natural gas. While market purchases might occasionally involve fossil fuels, emissions are neutralized through a stringent greenhouse gas neutrality policy.
Strategizing for a Sustainable Grid
With the region’s growth and increasing electricity demands for vehicles, homes, and businesses, reliance solely on existing hydroelectric dams isn’t viable.
To ensure continuous power supply and uphold environmental commitments, City Light plans a significant expansion of its energy portfolio in the coming decade. This includes incorporating wind, solar, advanced battery storage, and geothermal energy, ensuring reliable and affordable electricity amid changing climatic conditions.
Empowering Tomorrow’s Energy Solutions
As energy requirements escalate, City Light remains committed to resource diversification, cost savings, and combating climate change. Collaboration is crucial to these efforts.
