Workhorse Introduces a Cost-Effective Electric Van Option Amid Rising Fuel Costs

In response to rising fuel costs and customer feedback, Workhorse has unveiled a new, more affordable version of its W56 Step Van. This latest model caters to logistics providers who find the current 210 kWh version exceeds their range requirements for daily operations.

The new 140 kWh W56 Step Van is priced at $169,000 and comes in a 178-inch wheelbase. It features a composite body designed by Workhorse and promises a range sufficient for many delivery tasks. “The new 140 kWh version of our W56 step van is a result of listening to customer feedback and purpose-building a product to meet their needs,” said Scott Griffith, CEO of Workhorse.

Fleet operators face increasing fuel expenses, exacerbated by recent geopolitical tensions. More than 30% of Gulf refining capacity was recently compromised, creating an oil shortage and driving up prices. This scenario makes Workhorse’s affordable electric option particularly timely. “Commercial ground fleets have similar exposure to spikes in fuel prices as airlines,” Griffith noted, emphasizing the value of an electric alternative.

As of March 25, AAA reported a national average gas price of $3.98 per gallon, marking a significant increase from earlier in the month. This hike has prompted consumers to cut back on spending, according to CNN. By offering a budget-friendly electric van, Workhorse aims to provide fleet operators with a reliable way to mitigate these soaring costs.

The introduction of this new model is facilitated by Workhorse’s merger with Motiv Electric Trucks in December 2025, which has allowed the company to leverage economies of scale and reduce production costs. Together, the companies boast a combined operational mileage of 20 million miles, underscoring their experience in electric vehicle manufacturing.
