In a promising move towards Denmark’s green transition, technology group Wärtsilä has partnered with renewable energy firm Bigadan AS to enhance biogas efficiency. Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has received a contract to supply a biogas upgrading facility, known as PuregasCA, which will significantly boost the usability of biogas as a clean energy source. Scheduled for deployment at Bigadan’s facility in Horsens, Denmark, the plant is set to process 6000 Nm3 of raw biogas per hour, with the contract cemented in the third quarter of 2025.
This initiative marks a pivotal step in scaling up biogas production within Denmark, contributing substantially to the national agenda for renewable energy. The plant will utilize advanced amine scrubber technology from Wärtsilä, ensuring that the biogas meets Danish national gas grid standards efficiently.
Project Manager Casper Krog Hansen and Business Development Manager Christian A. Tidmarsh of Bigadan AS stated, “We are committed to supporting and promoting the green transition, and Wärtsilä upgrading solution will add momentum to our efforts. It is an exciting example of the recent advancements made in renewable energy technology. Biogas has huge potential as a sustainable energy solution, since it aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy sources.”
By the third quarter of 2026, the PuregasCA system is anticipated to be operational, delivering refined gas to Denmark’s national grid. Wärtsilä’s responsibilities include not only the installation but also the commissioning of the plant.
Goran Gajski, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, Biogas, commented on the strategic significance of the project: “The integration of biomass and biogas, along with wind and solar, is an important element in creating a holistic energy strategy, and the collaboration between Wärtsilä and Bigadan contributes significantly to this strategy. The innovative technology that we are able to deliver is based on our vast experience and deep in-house expertise, and our solid reputation and track record was an important consideration in the award of this contract.”
