Chinese Tesla Model Y L Owners Report Suspension Concerns
In China, Tesla’s Model Y L, a larger variant of the Model Y with three rows, has been at the center of controversy as owners report issues with the rear suspension. The vehicle has been available in China for about a year, and though it initially received a positive reception, recent social media activity highlights a growing concern.
Released in China almost a year ago, the Model Y L was initially well-received in the competitive EV market due to its larger size and additional seating. However, Tesla’s overall sales in the country have been declining, echoing a similar trend among other foreign brands facing stiff local competition.
Recent reports on platforms such as Sina.com and CarNewsChina, indicate a wave of complaints regarding the rear suspension collapsing. Initial discussions began on smzdm.com, a platform known for product reviews.
Between June and August, users on Xiaohongshu, also known as the “Chinese Instagram,” shared images showing low rear wheel arches, with smzdm.com identifying at least ten posts and numerous comments on the issue. To address this, owners devised a “finger test” to check their vehicles. By placing a hand between the wheel and the wheel arch, the test determines if the suspension is compromised: four fingers suggest no issue, three warrant caution, and fewer indicate a problem.
For a more precise assessment, a measuring tape can determine the height from the ground, with normal ranges between 764 and 804mm. If the height falls below 764mm, Tesla may offer a replacement according to its guidelines.
The compromised suspension can impact vehicle handling and accelerate tire wear. Some owners have reported a swaying sensation when driving affected cars. Most problematic vehicles originate from the initial production batch delivered in late 2025, and although many have been repaired under warranty, some issues persist post-service.
Until Tesla China formally addresses these concerns, users are advised to regularly monitor their vehicle’s suspension height and maintain detailed records, including photos. This vigilance is especially crucial for owners of early models, as it’s uncertain whether newer vehicles have the same vulnerabilities.
While the warranty covers most cases, it remains essential for owners, particularly those outside China with Shanghai-assembled cars, to stay alert. The US NHTSA is also investigating Tesla for front suspension failures, though unrelated to this rear suspension issue.
As the Model Y L was recently introduced in the US, questions linger about whether these suspension issues will affect American models. Since the US versions are assembled in Texas, differences may exist compared to Shanghai-built models. Until Tesla provides a solution, owners are advised to remain vigilant.
