Terra-Gen’s New Wind Project Boosts Clean Energy in Texas

In a significant move towards expanding renewable energy in Texas, Terra-Gen has successfully commissioned the Monte Cristo I Windpower Project, a 238.5-megawatt facility in Hidalgo County. This project is set to generate over 850 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equating to the power consumption of approximately 81,000 homes.

The Monte Cristo I Windpower Project stands as a testament to Terra-Gen’s continued investment in Texas, following their earlier venture, the Texas Big Spring wind facility. With both projects combined, Terra-Gen’s clean energy generation in the state now totals 273 megawatts.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony recently celebrated this milestone, attended by company representatives, local officials, and community members. Chief Financial Officer of Terra-Gen, John O’Connor, remarked, “It is an honor to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of men and women who made the commissioning of the Monte Cristo wind project possible.” He added that the project highlights the company’s commitment to providing clean, sustainable power and investing in local communities.

Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa expressed gratitude towards Terra-Gen, noting the project’s positive impact on the community’s progress. The wind facility’s construction phase brought about 280 jobs, with over 490,000 hours worked without any lost-time incidents, and included infrastructure improvements such as enhancements to 11 miles of state roads and 25 miles of county roads.

Long-term economic benefits from Monte Cristo I are expected to exceed $100 million through property taxes, landowner payments, and local contributions. Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez emphasized the broader implications of the project, stating, “This development represents more than clean, renewable energy, it’s an investment in our people and our long-term economic growth.”

Furthermore, Terra-Gen has obtained permits for Phase 2 of the Monte Cristo Windpower, with development activities already underway, reinforcing their commitment to renewable energy expansion in Texas.
