The 17th Annual Southeast Florida Climate Leadership Summit, held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, is a collaborative effort by the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact. The event brings together partners from Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties to address climate-related challenges.

Key discussions at the summit focus on disaster recovery, resilient housing, and sustainable transportation. Florida Atlantic University’s School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS) is a major sponsor, with its director, Steve Vollmer, delivering a keynote on coral reefs and oceanic impacts due to climate change.

“The Climate Leadership Summit is the essential annual forum for Southeast Florida’s top resiliency leaders to convene, translate knowledge into action and strengthen the regional coalition,” Vollmer stated. As a focal point for environmental challenges, Florida Atlantic University plays a crucial role in these discussions.

Panel participants include county administrators and FAU faculty such as Serena Hoermann and Jeffery Huber, who will share insights on urban planning and sea level rise adaptation. The summit, themed “Roots of Resilience: Cultivating a Sustainable Future,” underscores the importance of innovative solutions in the face of growing climate challenges.

Grunwald, a seasoned journalist formerly with the Washington Post, will discuss the pressing need to sustainably feed an expanding global population. His new book covers the detrimental effects of agriculture on deforestation and greenhouse gases. “We are losing a soccer field worth of forest to agriculture every six seconds,” he noted at the Alachua County Climate Festival, emphasizing the shift from natural to agricultural landscapes.

This annual summit serves as a vital platform for leaders across different sectors to exchange knowledge and drive collective efforts towards climate resilience. By convening in one of the four participating counties, the event highlights the regional commitment to addressing climate threats through collaboration and innovation.
