Gallium Statue Melts in Florida Heat as Climate Protest Targets Governor DeSantis
In a striking demonstration, a statue of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, crafted from gallium, was unveiled in Tallahassee, only to melt rapidly in the state’s warm climate. This symbolic act aimed to protest DeSantis’ policies regarding the climate crisis, highlighting his controversial stance on environmental issues.
The life-sized statue, made from gallium that liquefies at temperatures over 85.6 F, revealed a skull beneath DeSantis’ likeness as it melted. The protest, orchestrated by environmentalists, marked the conclusion of DeSantis’ eight-year governorship, set to end in January.
DeSantis has consistently opposed what he describes as a “radical climate agenda,” even endorsing legislation to remove phrases like “climate change” and “greenhouse gas emissions” from state legislation. Such measures have considerably limited the capability of state entities to address climate threats openly.
“I am not a global warming person, I don’t want that label on me,” DeSantis remarked in 2018. Despite southern Florida facing acute risks from rising sea levels and frequent, intensified hurricanes, the governor’s policies reflect a firm resistance to acknowledging human-driven climate change.
Florida’s political climate suggests continuity in this approach, with Republican Byron Donalds poised to succeed DeSantis in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Though Donalds acknowledges environmental conservation, he remains skeptical of the human impact on climate change, a stance at odds with the prevailing scientific consensus.
Candice Fortin, campaign manager at 350Action, which collaborated on the statue with Uncommon, an advertising agency, emphasized the urgency of climate action. “The climate crisis is one of the top issues facing our planet today. And yet, some candidates running for office still deny it’s happening, and deny the bold climate action that the people want,” she stated.
The installation, titled ‘DENIAL,’ serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing debate over climate policies in Florida. As the state grapples with the effects of climate change, the protest calls for a reevaluation of political priorities concerning environmental stewardship.
DeSantis, defending his record, posted on the X social media platform, asserting, “We’re restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots,” in response to criticisms of deprioritizing climate initiatives.
