Liberty Utilities Plans Major Energy Transition by 2028
In what has become a widely discussed topic, Liberty Utilities is embarking on a significant change in its energy supply strategy for Lake Tahoe residents. Contrary to circulating rumors, this transition does not mean cutting off power to thousands of residents but rather involves a strategic shift in where and how the energy is sourced.
Liberty Utilities is in the midst of transitioning from its current energy supplier, NV Energy, to an as-yet-undetermined new supplier. The company began laying the groundwork for this transition back in 2019, as part of a long-term strategy to enhance energy supply sustainability and reliability.
Liberty’s Energy Supply Strategy
Liberty currently provides electricity through a combination of solar power generated from its own facilities and additional power purchased from NV Energy. The company’s 60 megawatts of locally owned solar generation plays a crucial role in its energy mix.
By 2028, Liberty will end its wholesale energy supply contract with NV Energy. To ensure a smooth transition, Liberty is actively seeking new partnerships focused on sustainability, affordability, and reliability, while continuing to use NV Energy’s transmission lines to deliver power to its service area.
Liberty assures its customers that service will remain uninterrupted during this transition. “Liberty customers will not be left without service as a result of this transition,” the company stated. NV Energy will continue to support energy delivery until Liberty secures its own transmission rights.
Upcoming Changes and Initiatives
As part of its transition plan, Liberty is preparing to launch a competitive bidding process for new energy suppliers. This process is pending approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which Liberty anticipates will be approved by Summer 2026.
The timeline for this transition includes:
- Seeking CPUC approval to initiate the search for new energy partners.
- Conducting a formal bidding process in Summer 2026 to select new suppliers.
- Entering into new power agreements by Spring/Summer 2027, assuming CPUC approval.
- Completing the transition when NV Energy’s Greenlink-West project is operational by December 31, 2027.
Focus on Renewable Energy and Customer Benefits
Liberty is committed to enhancing its renewable energy portfolio while ensuring customer affordability. The company aims to explore diverse and modern energy sources, including more substantial investments in wind and solar power. This approach not only supports environmental sustainability but also offers potential financial benefits to customers by tapping into off-peak energy availability.
Liberty is also examining the possibility of connecting its system more directly to California’s electric grid, though such a move would require extensive investment and consideration of environmental impacts.
While transitioning away from NV Energy as a supplier, Liberty will maintain its relationship with NV Energy as a transmission provider, ensuring continued collaboration on shared objectives.
