Climate Change on Screen: Exploring Its Impact Through Fiction
The cinematic world has long been fascinated by the potential apocalyptic consequences of climate change. From the subtle to the spectacular, films and television shows have often mirrored our environmental anxieties. While 97 to 99 percent of scientists concur that human activities are driving climate change, it is often through fictional narratives that audiences viscerally experience the potential impacts on humanity.
In these narratives, global warming and its repercussions are blamed for societal issues ranging from isolation, as depicted in 2025’s “Don’t Let the Sun,” to infertility crises in 2006’s “Children of Men.” These stories, spanning genres from drama to comedy, serve as both entertainment and poignant reminders of the real-world consequences of environmental neglect. As viewers, the question persists: Could individual actions like driving electric cars or increasing vegetarian diets truly avert ecological calamity? If practiced collectively, perhaps they might — leaving us to explore climate change only through our screens.
