South Korean Firm to Boost Indiana’s Energy Sector with New Manufacturing Facility

In a significant move for Indiana’s energy landscape, Hanjung America, a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hanjung NCS, is set to open its inaugural U.S. manufacturing plant in the state. This development is anticipated to create over 300 high-paying jobs in Huntington, marking a substantial boost to the local economy.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun commented on the announcement, stating, “Hanjung America’s decision to locate its first North American manufacturing facility in Indiana is a major win for the state and for Huntington County.” He added that the facility would bolster Indiana’s status in the energy sector, offering numerous high-skill jobs to residents and enhancing the state’s supply chain capabilities.

The new plant will be situated on 133 acres at Riverfork West Industrial Park, focusing on the production of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). As a primary supplier to Samsung SDI, Hanjung America will use the facility to meet the increasing demand for its advanced components, including cooling systems and specialized fire extinguishers for container-type ESS. These components will support Stellantis and Samsung SDI’s StarPlus Energy battery manufacturing operations in Kokomo and the broader renewable energy network in Indiana.

Construction is planned to commence in April, with operations expected to begin by June 2027. Initially, the facility will employ over 300 individuals, with potential growth to more than 440 positions, offering wages above the county average. The company is also exploring further expansion opportunities within Indiana.

Kevin Kim, president of Hanjung America, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture: “We are delighted to establish Hanjung America in Huntington and to become a member of the Indiana community, and we look forward to contributing to regional development.”

Hanjung America joins a growing list of companies enhancing Indiana’s energy sector, including soulbrain MI and Jaweon Industrial. Huntington Mayor Richard Strick remarked, “Huntington is proud to welcome a Hanjung America production facility to Riverfork West. Hanjung’s technology makes energy storage safer and more effective, two critical requirements to lowering energy costs for consumers throughout the grid. These are good-paying manufacturing jobs, and our workforce will demonstrate once again what makes Huntington a special community in this global economy.”

Founded in 1995 in South Korea, Hanjung NCS specializes in components for HVAC systems, energy storage, and electric vehicles. The Huntington facility marks the company’s first manufacturing operation in North America, complementing existing operations in South Korea, China, and a customer service center in Michigan.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) has committed up to $4.5 million in incentive-based tax credits to support Hanjung America’s investment and job creation efforts, along with $400,000 in Hoosier Business Investment tax credits and $200,000 in training grants. These incentives will be available once the company fulfills its investment and job creation targets. Additional incentives have also been provided by Huntington County.
