GM Revolutionizes EV Charging with New App and Charging Initiatives
In a move aiming to streamline the electric vehicle (EV) experience, General Motors (GM) has unveiled several initiatives to enhance its energy business. During a recent event in San Francisco, the Detroit-based automaker introduced a new app feature designed to simplify access to charging stations and manage payments through a single interface.
The new Energy Pass feature will allow GM EV owners to locate and utilize public charging stations from networks such as Tesla, Electrify America, and the joint-venture Ionna via the myChevrolet, myCadillac, and myGMC apps. According to GM, this interface encompasses nearly 70% of all fast-charging stations in the U.S.
The app provides various functionalities, including:
- Access to participating charging networks
- Convenient start and end of charging sessions
- Live charging status updates
- Consolidated view of charging history and receipts
- Exclusive discounts at select networks
Furthermore, GM announced that from the 2027 model year, all its EVs will feature North American Charging Standard (NACS) inlets, aligning with Tesla’s charging ports. This update will support both slower home charging and faster public charging options.
An over-the-air update is also anticipated this year, introducing Plug & Charge capabilities for seamless payment processing at Tesla Supercharger stations. GM customers can immediately utilize these features at Ionna and EVgo stations.
Exploring Bidirectional Charging
At the GM Empower event, the company highlighted its efforts to improve battery systems for energy storage, potentially easing the burden on the nation’s energy grid. GM is enhancing its vehicle-to-home systems with firmware updates, enabling full vehicle-to-grid capabilities. This feature allows EV owners to return energy to the grid, potentially lowering electricity bills as utility companies buy back energy during high-demand periods.
GM is actively testing bidirectional charging in Michigan homes in partnership with DTE Energy and has initiated a similar pilot project in California. Wade Sheffer, GM Energy’s vice president, emphasized the importance of integrating EVs into the energy grid, stating, “This transition won’t be easy, and we deeply respect the challenge of balancing day-to-day grid reliability with rapid innovation.”
Advancing Battery Technology with Sodium-Ion
In another forward-thinking initiative, GM is advancing its research into sodium-ion battery technology. This alternative to lithium is more abundant and potentially more cost-effective. Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of battery and sustainability, explained that the company is developing sodium-ion cells for grid-scale storage, leveraging their expertise in battery design and prototyping.
Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telemetry, noted the potential of sodium-ion batteries for energy storage, despite their lower energy density compared to lithium-ion. He remarked that GM’s initiatives position the company for future success in a competitive global market.
