French Offshore Wind Farm Begins Supplying Electricity

Ocean Winds starts power at its 30 MW floating wind farm, EFGL, in France, marking offshore wind progress.
French Floating Offshore Wind Farm Starts Delivering Electricity

Ocean Winds (OW), an international offshore wind energy company formed by EDP Renewables and ENGIE, has initiated electricity production at its 30 MW Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion (EFGL) floating offshore wind farm.

With electricity now reaching the French grid, the project is supplying renewable energy to homes and businesses in Southern France.

The project is developed with Banque des Territoires.

Featuring three 10 MW turbines on floating foundations, the pilot wind farm, located 16 kilometers off the coast, demonstrates the feasibility of floating offshore wind in the Mediterranean’s particular conditions.

OW stated that the project strengthened a sustainable local supply chain, with 85% of direct suppliers being French companies. More than 99% are based in Europe, and 60% qualify as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

This collaboration was evident during the project’s assembly and installation at the Port of Port-La Nouvelle. In its operational phase, the project supports over 20 workers monitoring energy production and maintenance.

Craig Windram, CEO at Ocean Winds, stated: “EFGL’s first power marks OW’s 15-year leadership in floating offshore wind, showcasing our capability in delivering and operating offshore wind technologies globally. From floating solutions in deep-water conditions to bottom-fixed projects, our industrial expertise ensures reliable delivery. This milestone enhances our track record and strengthens our position to scale offshore wind worldwide.”

The EFGL wind farm is expected to generate about 110,000 MWh/year, powering approximately 50,000 residents annually for 20 years.

Marc Hirt, Country Manager for France at Ocean Winds, commented: “The launch of electricity production at EFGL is crucial for France’s energy sovereignty and the wider floating wind sector. It highlights the precision and collaboration necessary for bringing floating wind to commercial scale, benefiting the Occitanie region through green energy production and local economic support.”

EFGL serves as a pilot for larger projects, including the 250 MW Eoliennes Flottantes d’Occitanie (EFLO) awarded to OW and Banque des Territoires in 2024.

Additionally, EFGL is the world’s first nature-inclusive floating wind farm, featuring artificial marine habitats designed by Ecocean to enhance biodiversity. This innovation sets a new standard for responsible offshore wind development globally.
