Cooling Down and Cashing In: The Rise of Renter-Friendly Energy Solutions

As temperatures rise, so does the demand on electrical grids, often pushing them to their limits. However, innovative solutions are emerging that not only alleviate grid pressure but also provide financial incentives to everyday consumers. One such initiative is led by Every Electric, which offers a unique approach to managing energy use during peak demand.

“Distributed energy storage is a resource that [utilities] can leverage to avoid these peak demand spikes, and there’s a clear benefit for them, in terms of deferring their capacity investments,” said Bryan Bollinger, a professor of marketing and economic policy at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

California leads a movement among states to enhance grid support by utilizing customer-owned energy devices. These virtual power plants, often involving technologies like Tesla Powerwalls, mostly benefit homeowners. Every Electric, however, addresses a different demographic: renters who seek involvement in energy efficiency yet lack access to traditional solar installations.

Every Electric’s solution circumvents the regulatory hurdles that large-scale battery storage systems face in New York City. While large batteries encounter development challenges with Con Edison, Every Electric’s compact batteries avoid these issues, being perceived as standard household electronics.

Participants in Every Electric’s program receive financial compensation, reflecting their contribution to grid stability. The reward is calculated based on their peak summer utility bills, with a maximum of $150 per power bank pairing.

The funding for these rewards is sourced from Con Edison’s Smart Usage Rewards program. This initiative pays customers to reduce energy during critical times. Every Electric acts as an aggregator, managing numerous power banks and sharing some benefits with participants while reinvesting in program expansion.

With the promise of cooling cost reduction, demand for these battery units is high. Approximately 10,000 window AC owners have expressed interest, and Every Electric aims to meet these orders throughout the summer.

Con Edison, serving 3.7 million customers, reported over 50,000 users participating in demand-response programs, contributing 500 megawatts of capacity. These programs were activated 27 times during recent heat waves in NYC and Westchester County.

Specific performance data for Every Electric’s pilot during these heat events remains unavailable, but such programs, alongside infrastructure enhancements, have eased grid strain.

Every Electric, backed by a mix of private investment and grants, sees significant potential for scalability. Co-founder Wang noted the urgency from utilities and regulators to explore all avenues for cost-effective and reliable grid management.

Bollinger, reflecting on his experience as a New York City renter, hopes for nationwide adoption of similar programs, emphasizing their potential to democratize access to renewable technologies for non-homeowners. “It provides access to this kind of technology to non-homeowners as well, which we just haven’t seen with a lot of renewable energy technologies,” he said.
