Certification Granted to Japan’s Offshore Wind Project in Oga, Katagami, and Akita

Japan’s Oga–Katagami–Akita Offshore Wind Project Receives Certification

The 315 MW Oga–Katagami–Akita offshore wind project in Japan has received a certificate of conformity from Bureau Veritas Japan, confirming that the design of its wind power generation facilities complies with Japanese technical standards and regulatory requirements.

The offshore wind farm off Akita Prefecture is being developed by Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy, a consortium including JERA Nex BP, Electric Power Development (J-POWER), Tohoku Electric Power, and Itochu.

This project is one of Japan’s first fixed-bottom offshore wind developments in general sea areas to progress through the public tender process. It also features turbines exceeding 10 MW. The 21 wind turbines will each generate 15 MW and are supplied by Vestas.

Designed to withstand rare earthquakes, this 315 MW facility is the world’s first 15 MW-class offshore wind farm with such seismic considerations, according to COWI, which collaborated with Kajima Corporation and Kobori Research Complex on the project’s monopile foundations design.

COWI noted that the certification milestone was achieved through collaboration with key partners, including Kajima Corporation, Vestas Japan, MHI Vestas Japan, and Ove Arup & Partners Japan. The conformity assessment involved comprehensive site condition assessments, integrated load analysis, and detailed design verification across all project elements.

Earlier reports on the Oga–Katagami–Akita project indicate wind turbine deliveries will begin in 2026, with commissioning expected in 2027.

The offshore wind farm is slated for full commissioning in June 2028.
