From its grassroots inception a decade ago, the Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE) has rapidly expanded its influence in New York’s energy sector, advocating for a shift to renewable energy that harmonizes with Earth’s ecosystems. The organization addresses energy issues on various levels, from individual households to state policies.

Position Overview

AGREE is currently seeking a full-time Communications Director to enhance its public presence and extend its reach both locally in Central New York and statewide. As the organization has grown, so have its communication needs, prompting the creation of this new role. The existing Director of Communications and Outreach will refocus their efforts on outreach and campaign activities.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic communicator with a comprehensive skill set to develop and execute communication strategies that promote AGREE’s objectives and maintain consistency with its values. The Communications Director will focus on three key areas:

  • Support for ongoing initiatives (Proactive)

    • Crafting and implementing communication strategies to support AGREE’s goals
    • Creating visually appealing materials for campaigns
    • Developing talking points and media guides

  • Rapid-response to policy changes (Reactive)

    • Issuing press releases, calls-to-action, and social media posts
    • Organizing press conferences and preparing staff for public engagements

  • Long-term brand enhancement and fundraising (Strategic)

    • Building media relationships and managing online presence
    • Drafting op-eds and engaging with social media
    • Conducting fundraising and donor communication activities

The Communications Director will report to the Deputy Director, collaborating with staff to manage the diverse communication needs of AGREE’s campaigns. Key attributes for this role include strong decision-making skills, excellent judgment, and a collaborative spirit.

Applicants should be organized, resourceful, detail-oriented, and passionate about AGREE’s mission. Previous experience in communications and a background in environmental justice are highly valued.

  • Location: This is a remote position, but candidates must reside in New York State and be available to travel to Albany and Syracuse for meetings and events.
  • Compensation: The salary ranges from $60,000 to $70,000, with additional adjustments for NYC residents. Benefits include vacation, paid leave, and health insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Developing a strategic roadmap and refining communication strategies
  • Coordinating staff communications and making strategic content decisions
  • Managing AGREE’s online presence and multimedia assets
  • Writing and distributing press releases, and planning press events
  • Creating campaign materials and cultivating media relationships
  • Developing fundraising communication assets

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, particularly in writing for public consumption
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, tools like Action Network, WordPress, and Canva
  • Comfortable with public speaking and engaging diverse audiences
  • Proficiency in managing multiple projects and collaborating effectively
  • A commitment to social and environmental justice
