As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain traction, the landscape of this technology-driven industry is shifting rapidly. With political decisions and technological advancements impacting the future of EVs, it’s crucial to understand the current trends and consumer sentiments surrounding these vehicles.

The surge in electric vehicle sales over the past decade has marked a significant shift towards sustainable transportation. However, the momentum faced a potential roadblock with the Trump administration’s decision to eliminate the $7,500 federal electric car tax credit, also known as the New Clean Vehicle Credit. This tax credit had been a driving force behind automakers’ push towards EV innovation.

Emily Forlini, a PCMag senior reporter and EV expert, commented on the situation, stating, “The credit incentivized nearly every automaker to develop new EVs and spin up entire businesses around them, from charging to dash tech.” Despite the setback, Forlini remains optimistic, noting that “EVs are booming in Europe, with record sales every month.”

Even with the tax credit’s removal, the demand for EVs remains evident. Record sales were reported in August, just before the credit’s expiration. Battery technology and improvements in vehicle range continue to sustain interest in EVs and hybrids.

The Leading EV and Hybrid Brands for 2025

In the ever-evolving automotive industry, consumer preferences shift as new technologies emerge. In the latest survey by PCMag, Toyota emerged as the top brand for overall satisfaction in EVs, PHEVs, and HEVs, tying with BMW, Chevrolet, and Lexus. Toyota secured the lead due to its high recommendation scores.

Among plug-in hybrids, Toyota again stood out, excelling in cost of operation, reliability, and services/repairs. The brand’s strong performance also extends to hybrid electric vehicles, where it maintains its top position.

While Toyota shines in hybrids, BMW leads in the all-electric vehicle category, offering an unparalleled driving experience. BMW’s high scores in cost of operation and reliability, along with top ratings for driving experience, solidify its position despite the brand’s premium pricing.

Chevrolet also received accolades for its EVs, particularly for driving range and dashboard technology support, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Meanwhile, Tesla’s navigation system remains unmatched, scoring above 9.0 for integrated satellite navigation.

Top Choices for Home Chargers and Charging Networks

Vehicle charging technology is essential for EV adoption. Level 1 and Level 2 chargers are the primary options for home charging, with Level 3 chargers catering to public charging stations. This year, ChargePoint and Tesla lead the home charging market following the exit of Enel X.

Tesla’s Wall Connector, compatible with various EVs with the right adapter, receives high praise from users. As one user describes, “My Tesla in-home charger is outside next to the driveway. Every night, I just plug my car in as a matter of routine. Works great.”

ChargePoint, offering universal compatibility with its J1772 plug, also earns a Readers’ Choice award. In the Level 3 charging station arena, Tesla’s Supercharger network excels in reliability and ease of use, despite having fewer locations than ChargePoint.

Emily Forlini highlights the importance of home charging, stating, “Being able to charge at a Tesla station offers major peace of mind for road trips, but the reality is that 80 to 90% of EV charging occurs at home.”

Leading Apps for Route Planning and Charging Station Location

For EV drivers, finding charging stations is crucial. Tesla’s app remains a top choice for locating Tesla Supercharger stations, while PlugShare offers a comprehensive map of all charging stations, earning it a Readers’ Choice award for inclusivity.

Waze emerges as the preferred app for route planning, praised for its incident alerts and user-driven data. Jordan Minor, a PCMag senior writer, notes, “Waze’s focus on driving may make it more niche compared with other, more all-purpose navigation apps, but it serves that important niche very well.”
