California’s Unyielding Economic Expansion

California, under Governor Newsom’s leadership, has not only maintained its position as a global economic powerhouse but also achieved significant milestones in job creation and sustainable development. The state’s economy, known for its diverse industrial landscape, is now the fourth largest in the world. This growth is driven by strategic initiatives like the Jobs First program, which focuses on building local economies and supporting regional sectors.

Local Initiatives Fueling Statewide Growth

Governor Newsom’s engagement with local communities, such as the Kern County Jobs First Collaborative, exemplifies a bottom-up approach to economic development. Initiatives like the Mojave Micro Mill, set to open next year, highlight the state’s commitment to climate-forward industries. This project will not only create a multitude of jobs but also set new standards in sustainable steel manufacturing, utilizing a 63-acre solar farm to power operations.

Strategic Investments and Support

California’s economic success is bolstered by strategic investments, including a $30 million tax credit from the California Competes program, which supported the Mojave Micro Mill’s development. In exchange, over $540 million in capital investments and nearly 450 jobs are expected. State support extends to clean energy, with the California Energy Commission approving up to $14 million for battery storage, and a sales and use tax exclusion for manufacturing equipment.

Educational Partnerships and Workforce Development

Collaborations with educational institutions like California State University, Bakersfield, and local community colleges, are establishing pathways to careers in steel manufacturing. These partnerships aim to prepare a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of the evolving industry.

Regional Investment and Economic Strategies

In 2021, Governor Newsom launched the Regional Investment Initiative, originally the Community Economic Resilience Fund, to foster regional economic growth. This initiative has led to the development of comprehensive regional roadmaps across 13 regions, which have been recognized as Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies by the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

Statewide Impact and Future Growth

The statewide effects of these initiatives are profound. In 2025, Jobs First investments of nearly $1.6 billion supported over 61,000 jobs and trained more than 142,000 workers. Recent investments of $48.5 million are projected to create 20,000 new jobs across key sectors.

Economic Performance and Leadership

Under Governor Newsom, California’s economy expanded by $1.58 trillion, outpacing other states and nations. With a vast network of over 4.3 million small businesses, California leads in 17 of 20 major economic sectors and has added 129,300 jobs from September 2025 to September 2026. Unemployment has consistently declined, with a current rate of 5.1%, reflecting the state’s robust economic health.
