Ford’s New Energy Strategy: A Shift Towards Stationary Storage Amidst Data Center Challenges
Amidst a growing demand for energy storage solutions and rising tensions around data center expansions, Ford Motor Co. is making strategic moves to solidify its presence in the energy sector. With a new chapter on the horizon, Ford has appointed Dave Carroll as president of Ford Energy, effective August 31. Previously with ENGIE North America, Carroll brings a wealth of experience in renewable and low-carbon energy solutions. His role will involve overseeing the retooling of Ford’s battery plant in Glendale, Kentucky, aimed at producing lithium-iron-phosphate batteries by next year. This move is expected to support Ford’s Model e electric vehicle division in its quest for profitability by 2029.
Carroll’s leadership experience is vast, having significantly expanded ENGIE North America’s renewable assets. His insights into power infrastructure requirements are anticipated to drive Ford Energy’s growth. “Dave brings a rare, buy-side perspective on what utilities and other customers truly require as they build out power infrastructure,” stated Jim Farley, Ford’s President and CEO. Farley also emphasized the combination of U.S. manufacturing and advanced battery technology under Carroll’s leadership as pivotal for scaling Ford Energy.
Before joining Ford, Carroll was a key figure in the American Clean Power Association and held senior roles at EDF Renewables and Avangrid Renewables. Expressing his enthusiasm, Carroll stated, “I’ve spent my career developing, financing and operating energy assets, and I’m excited to join Ford because there’s no bigger opportunity in this market than building a category-defining energy business for one of America’s most iconic and important companies.”
The backdrop to these developments is Ford’s Model e division, which reported a substantial operating loss of $4.8 billion last year. As the company anticipates ongoing negative earnings, efforts are focused on achieving profitability by 2029 through the launch of advanced EVs and energy storage solutions, particularly for AI-driven data centers. Ford Energy has already secured a framework agreement with EDF North America, allowing the procurement of substantial battery energy storage systems starting in 2028.
As the automotive industry adjusts to slower-than-expected EV sales, companies like Ford are turning to stationary energy storage as a strategic pivot. This approach aims to optimize battery plant capacities while the market for electric vehicles stabilizes.
Lisa Drake’s impending retirement marks the end of an era. Joining Ford in 1994, she played a crucial role in diverse vehicle projects, notably the F-150 and Super Duty. Her leadership in electrification and battery manufacturing has been instrumental in Ford’s energy ventures. “Throughout her three decades with Ford, Lisa exemplified the very best of our leadership,” remarked Farley, commending her contributions.
