Utah Residents Show Support for Clean Energy Despite Challenges

As the world grapples with the effects of climate change, a recent poll from Utah State University’s Community and Natural Resources Institute (CANRI) reveals that a significant portion of Utahns are willing to increase their utility costs to support clean energy initiatives. The findings indicate a growing trend towards environmentally friendly energy sources among the state’s residents.

The Utah People and Environment Poll, updated for 2024 and 2025, shows that 56% of those surveyed are open to paying more for energy derived from clean sources. The survey underscores a strong preference for solar energy, with 74% in favor, while 64% support wind and geothermal energy, and 52% back nuclear options.

Stacia Ryder, associate director at CANRI, emphasized the importance of these findings, stating, “We found an overwhelming majority of Utahns express a willingness to pay more for clean energy.” The research aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers as they plan the state’s future energy strategies.

Despite the positive results, some remain skeptical of the willingness to bear additional costs for renewable energy. Rep. Colin Jack, R-St. George, expressed doubt, saying, “I think talk is cheap and that the truth of the matter is, there’s very few people who are actually willing to pay more for solar energy.”

Jack, who is also the chief operating officer at Dixie Power, referenced the Sun Smart program as a case study. Launched in 2008, the program allowed residents of St. George to purchase shares in a solar generator. Despite high expectations, only 25 customers participated, a stark contrast to the city’s population of approximately 100,000.

Previous studies, such as one by Rocky Mountain Power in 2014, also reflect a discrepancy between stated support for renewable energy and actual financial commitment. While 90% of respondents favored increased solar and renewable use, interest dropped to 5% when additional costs were factored in.

Ryder suggests that future surveys should delve deeper into specific concerns, including the exact amount residents are willing to pay and factors influencing program adoption. “It’s not just about the cost, but what is the ease of buy-in for residents and how well is the program marketed?” Ryder noted, highlighting the complexities of implementing renewable energy initiatives.
