California’s Surge in Zero-Emission Vehicle Sales Amid Rising Gasoline Prices
With gasoline prices soaring due to geopolitical tensions, California has witnessed a notable surge in the sale of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), reflecting a broader shift in consumer preferences towards sustainable transportation options. The state’s commitment to expanding ZEV infrastructure has bolstered its position as a leader in this sector.
SACRAMENTO — The California Energy Commission (CEC) reported a significant uptick in the purchase of zero-emission vehicles during the second quarter of 2026. Californians acquired 86,857 new ZEVs, which constituted 19.1% of all new car sales, marking a 3.3 percentage point increase from the previous quarter. This surge primarily comprised electric vehicles (EVs), accounting for 16.6% of new car sales, a stark contrast to the national average of 5.8%.
Despite the absence of federal tax credits, California’s recent sales figures are only slightly below last year’s second quarter, which benefited from a $7,500 federal incentive. Governor Gavin Newsom’s upcoming instant rebate program, MyFirstEV, is anticipated to further stimulate ZEV sales.
Governor Newsom remarked, “While Donald Trump makes Americans pay the bill for his Iran war at the pump, California is giving families the freedom to choose a cheaper way forward by going electric.” He emphasized that the MyFirstEV program aims to empower Californians with more affordable electric vehicle options.
“This is an exciting time for prospective EV buyers in California,” commented CEC Commissioner Nancy Skinner. She highlighted the affordability and availability of EV models and the state’s robust charging infrastructure as key incentives for potential buyers.
California’s EV market share significantly outpaces the national average, maintaining a strong foothold even after the discontinuation of federal incentives on September 30, 2025. Cox Automotive data indicates that the national EV sales share has stagnated at 5.8% over the past quarters.
Supporting Californians with the MyFirstEV Program
The MyFirstEV initiative, managed by CARB, offers substantial rebates to first-time ZEV buyers, including:
- $3,500 off new EVs with an MSRP up to $50,000
- $1,750 off used EVs priced up to $25,000
- Eligibility for any Californian purchasing their first ZEV
This program represents a $135.5 million state investment, matched by 13 automakers, totaling $270 million in savings for consumers at the point of sale. This initiative is poised to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for California families.
Investments in ZEV Infrastructure
California continues to advance its ZEV infrastructure to support the growing number of electric vehicles. The Clean Transportation Program Investment Plan Update has allocated $98.5 million for the fiscal year 2025-2026 to enhance light-duty ZEV infrastructure, including EV charging and hydrogen fueling stations.
The state boasts 216,445 publicly available EV charging ports and over 20,000 direct-current fast chargers (DCFCs), facilitating both short and long-distance travel across California’s transportation networks. These chargers are strategically located in accessible public areas such as grocery stores and park-and-ride lots, as well as shared locations like workplaces and residential complexes.
The CEC is also conducting ongoing studies to assess and address the evolving EV charging infrastructure needs across the state, ensuring California remains at the forefront of the clean energy transition.
