Wisconsin Unveils Comprehensive Plan to Tackle Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Madison, Wis. – In a groundbreaking initiative, the Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) and the Office of Sustainability and Clean Energy (OSCE) have introduced the Emissions Reduction Roadmap – Actions for Sustainability in Wisconsin. This comprehensive framework aims to address all key sources of greenhouse gas emissions across the state, offering strategies to curb pollution, foster job creation, and enhance the quality of life for Wisconsin residents.

DOA Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld emphasized the urgent need for action, stating, “Wisconsin residents face multiple challenges to their health, well-being, and financial future, thanks to climate change.” She highlighted the roadmap’s potential to generate new job opportunities, boost community health, and localize energy production through collaborative efforts among state policies, community initiatives, and private partnerships.

The comprehensive plan, developed with contributions from local communities, industry stakeholders, Tribal nations, and the people of Wisconsin, identifies seven critical sectors for emission reduction:

  • Agriculture
  • Commercial and Residential Buildings
  • Energy Generation
  • Industrial Processes and Facilities
  • Natural and Working Lands
  • Transportation
  • Waste and Materials Management

OSCE Director Maria Redmond pointed out the collaborative nature of the roadmap, saying, “Everyone has a role to play in securing our sustainable future, and the OSCE developed this plan based on thoughtful discussions and extensive public input, to define actions with measurable results.” The roadmap provides a strategic shift away from the status quo, aiming to balance environmental and economic health for Wisconsin.

Building on prior state initiatives like the Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change, the Clean Energy Plan, and other strategic plans, the roadmap aligns with existing recommendations to ensure cohesive action across the state. The OSCE collaborated with agency staff, academic institutions, and expert advisors to pinpoint actions that reflect the priorities of Wisconsin’s citizens and businesses. This effort has resulted in actionable steps designed to diminish emissions, foster health improvements, and bolster resilience against economic and environmental challenges.

Established by Governor Evers through Executive Order #38, the OSCE leads Wisconsin’s efforts to combat climate change by promoting clean energy resources and technologies. The office spearheads the implementation of the state’s inaugural Clean Energy Plan, introduced in 2022, and encourages state agencies to embrace sustainable practices through its Lead-by-Example program.

To further engage the public, the OSCE plans to conduct a series of webinars focusing on the roadmap’s different sectors and actions. Details on these webinars will be provided later. Those interested can sign up for updates via the Office newsletter and find more information at osce.wi.gov.
