Volkswagen Introduces the ID.UNYX 08: A New Era of Electric SUVs in China
Volkswagen has unveiled its first fully connected electric SUV, the ID.UNYX 08, in China. Priced under $35,000, this marks Volkswagen’s strategic move to reclaim its position in the competitive Chinese automotive market, following the end of its 15-year dominance by local giant BYD in 2023.
In a bid to revive its electric vehicle sales, which saw a 63% dip in the first quarter, Volkswagen is launching a new EV in China every two weeks. The ID.UNYX 08, co-developed with XPeng, is the first release in this ambitious rollout.
The launch event, held on a Thursday night, revealed that the ID.UNYX 08 is available in three trims: Pure, Ultra, and Max. It starts at 229,900 yuan ($33,700), which is slightly less than its pre-order price. Volkswagen’s ID.UNYX 08 is not just another EV; it’s a blend of German engineering and advanced local technology, aimed at regaining lost market share in China.
Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume commented, “Three years ago, we launched our strong China strategy – It is now unleashing its full power. The ID.UNYX 08 is the next impressive proof of this.” The first series models rolled off the production line at Volkswagen Anhui in Hefei on March 13.
Under the hood, the ID.UNYX 08 boasts an 800V electric architecture, providing ultra-fast charging capabilities that allow the vehicle to charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. It also features XPeng’s latest Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) ADAS driving technology, delivering up to 1,500 TOPS of computing power for autonomous navigation both on highways and in urban settings.
Inside, the SUV offers a luxurious experience with dual 14.96″ navigation and infotainment screens and a 10.25″ driver display. A built-in refrigerator adds to its unique features. It is available in both single and dual-motor configurations, with power outputs of 230 kW (308 hp) for the single motor and 370 kW (496 hp) for the all-wheel-drive version.
Two battery options, supplied by CATL, are offered: 82 kWh and 95 kWh, providing ranges from 630 km (391 miles) to 730 km (453 miles) based on the CLTC cycle.
Volkswagen ID.UNYX 08 Trim Options
| Trim | Battery | CLTC Range | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure | 82 kWh | 630 km | 229,900 yuan ($33,700) |
| Ultra | 95 kWh | 730 km | 249,900 yuan ($36,700) |
| Max | 95 kWh | 700 km | 289,900 yuan ($42,500) |
The ID.UNYX 08 measures 5,000 mm in length, 1,954 mm in width, and 1,672 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm, positioning it against competitors like the Xiaomi YU7 and Li Auto i6. Volkswagen plans to introduce the SUV in the first half of 2026, with another model in collaboration with XPeng set to launch by year-end. The company aims to debut 50 new NEV models in China by 2030, striving to maintain its status as a leading international car manufacturer.
Volkswagen’s swift production timeline, completing its first series model just 24 months after partnering with XPeng, showcases what it refers to as “China Speed.” Despite starting 2026 as China’s top-selling brand, Volkswagen faces stiff competition as domestic rivals ramp up their market entries. BYD’s recent unveiling of its Blade Battery 2.0, with a 1,000 km range and 5-minute charging, underscores the intensity of the competition.
Volkswagen’s success in this market will depend on leveraging local technologies and software to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape.
