Volvo’s EX60: A New Chapter in Electric Vehicles

Volvo is set to make waves with its upcoming all-electric EX60, a two-row, five-seat model boasting an impressive range and rapid charging capabilities. Expected to hit the market later this year, the EX60 offers up to 400 miles of range and can gain 173 miles of charge in just 10 minutes with its 400-kW fast charger.

Official Reveal and Design

At a recent unveiling in Stockholm, Volvo showcased the EX60, highlighting its design and features. This new crossover will be available in two trims: the standard EX60 and the off-road-ready EX60 Cross Country. The Cross Country model stands out with its unique wheels, distinctive branding, and increased ground clearance.

Powertrain Options and Range

Volvo’s EX60 will come with three powertrain configurations:

  • P12 AWD offers an estimated range of 400 miles.
  • P10 AWD provides a range of 320 miles.
  • P6 RWD, with a range of 310 miles, sacrifices all-wheel drive for a more affordable price.

The P12 model is anticipated to have the longest range of any Volvo electric vehicle to date. Equipped with a NACS charge port, it can access over 25,000 DC fast chargers in the Tesla Super Charger Network, a feature Volvo claims will “end range anxiety.”

Innovative Features and Technology

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson remarked, “The new, all-electric EX60 changes the game in terms of range, charging and price and represents a new beginning for Volvo Cars and our customers.” The car rides on the SPA3 platform, featuring cell-to-body technology where the battery is integrated into the car’s structure, enhancing weight efficiency and rigidity.

The EX60 also debuts Volvo’s “HuginCore” system, which facilitates the car’s computing abilities. Collaborations with tech leaders like Google, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm further enhance the vehicle’s capabilities. Notably, the EX60 is the first to include Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, which allows for natural interactions without needing specific voice commands.

Driving Experience and Efficiency

Volvo emphasizes that the EX60 offers a responsive user experience, with quick-loading maps and intuitive voice assistance. The vehicle’s design, including next-generation e-motors and a new battery cell design, aims to improve energy efficiency and driving range while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

The EX60 features an aerodynamic exterior, with a streamlined front grille and lowered hood, achieving a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.26. While Volvo has not detailed specific safety features, the EX60 is expected to incorporate advanced sensor technology for enhanced safety.

Market Launch and Pricing

The EX60 will be available in Europe first, with the U.S. release planned for late spring. Production will begin in Sweden, with deliveries starting in the summer for the P6 and P10 variants, and the P12 shortly thereafter. While pricing is yet to be confirmed, it is speculated to be competitive with existing models, potentially in the low-60s range.
