Veterans Find a New Mission in Renewable Energy
As Veterans Day approaches, the transition from military service to civilian life is a journey many veterans embark on with the help of the renewable energy sector. This industry has become a beacon for veterans, providing them with a new mission that aligns with the values and skills honed during their service.
The renewable energy sector has successfully absorbed veterans into its workforce for over ten years, offering a smooth transition into civilian roles. Impressively, veterans represent 9% of the U.S. energy workforce, with 34,000 joining in 2023 alone. This is largely due to the industry’s emphasis on structure, teamwork, and purpose—principles that mirror military life.
Cliff Barker, a project manager at JCG Land Services and a veteran, shares how his military background in precision, discipline, and process prepared him for a successful career in wind development. Wind projects require meticulous planning and patience, often taking years to complete, with each project potentially worth millions and creating hundreds of jobs. For veterans like Barker, attention to detail is paramount.
In Iowa, the renewable energy industry is a significant economic contributor, supporting 14,500 jobs and generating $76.4 million annually in taxes. In counties such as Adair, Ida, and O’Brien, wind projects have become major taxpayers, funding essential local services and infrastructure.
Barker recounts his first wind project, where he was responsible for gaining support from undecided landowners. This experience highlighted the project’s complexity and the critical role of integrity, professionalism, and follow-through, values reinforced by his military service.
Throughout his career in renewable energy, Barker has built lasting relationships with landowners and witnessed the tangible benefits these projects bring to communities. His ongoing service through the American Legion continues to be shaped by the same principles of discipline and teamwork.
This Veterans Day, Barker reflects on his dual role of serving his country and contributing to its renewable energy future, proud to stand at this meaningful intersection.
