Amidst rising concerns over climate change and environmental degradation, a United Nations report reveals the escalating threats facing our oceans. Compiled by 600 scientists across 86 countries, the assessment points to a “deepening crisis” impacting marine ecosystems that are vital for human sustenance.

The comprehensive World Ocean Assessment, the third of its kind since 2015, underscores critical issues such as climate-induced sea-level rise, ocean acidification, dying coral reefs, and dwindling fish stocks — the latter of which account for 20% of the global animal protein supply. The report’s findings emphasize that without immediate and coordinated global intervention, the deterioration of ocean health could have dire consequences for climate stability, biodiversity, and food security.

Ian Butler, a lead author and marine ecologist, stresses the urgency in an email statement: “The coming decade is decisive: without rapid, coordinated global action, ocean health will continue to decline, threatening climate stability, biodiversity resilience, food security, livelihoods and the well-being of billions.”

The assessment notes that coastal areas account for approximately 45% of global economic activity, with about 3 billion people living within 100 kilometers of the ocean. The report identifies significant contributors to ocean health decline, including plastic waste, agricultural runoff, sewage, and chemical pollutants, which bioaccumulate in marine life and affect human consumers.

Data from 2021 indicates that 38% of global fish stocks were overharvested, up from 35% in 2019. Climate change further exacerbates this issue by destroying coral reefs that support 25% of marine species. The report highlights that one-sixth of ocean heat absorption of the past seven decades occurred between 2018 and 2023, leading to more severe hurricanes and prompting species migrations that disrupt local fisheries.

Ocean warming also contributes to 30% to 50% of sea-level rise, posing threats to coastal populations. The phenomenon known as thermal expansion has seen annual global sea level rise accelerate from 2.1 mm (1993-2002) to 4.3 mm (2013-2023).

The temporary reprieve from ocean stressors during the pandemic has not halted the industrialization of marine ecosystems, with deep sea mining operations looming as a potential risk to seabed habitats. Despite the vast scope of the assessment, researchers admit that significant gaps remain in our understanding, with only 27% of the global seabed mapped.

Moreover, the report highlights uncertainties regarding the vulnerability of marine biodiversity and deep-sea ecosystems to climate change. Nonetheless, Butler expresses cautious optimism, citing the UN high seas biodiversity treaty’s ratification, which facilitates the establishment of marine protected areas in international waters: “I believe with urgent, coordinated global action we still can restore its health to secure a healthy, biodiverse ocean which would benefit all life on Earth.”
