Offshore wind energy produced a record 17.7% of the UK’s electricity in 2025, generating an unprecedented 52 TWh, as reported by the latest Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES) from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
This milestone increased from 17.1%, or 48.8 TWh, in 2024, attributed to additional wind capacity and higher-than-average wind speeds by DESNZ.
A report from the Crown Estate earlier this year highlights that the UK has 46 fully operational offshore wind farms, 2,820 turbines, and 42 offshore substations.
DESNZ data shows offshore wind contributed to 60% of all wind generation and 34% of the UK’s renewable electricity output in 2025, with production nearly triple that of a decade ago.
Renewable sources provided 52.1% of the UK’s electricity last year, up from 50.5% in 2024, marking the second consecutive year of generating more than half the country’s electricity from renewables.
Electricity generation from renewable sources hit a record 153 TWh, compared to 144.5 TWh the prior year, while fossil fuels contributed 32.3%, mainly from natural gas.
Wind was the primary source of renewable energy, generating a record 86.4 TWh and comprising 29.5% of total electricity. Onshore wind produced 34.4 TWh, representing 11.7% of electricity, while solar achieved a record 20.1 TWh, supplying 6.9% of the UK’s electricity. Together, renewable and nuclear power accounted for 64.3% of the UK’s electricity in 2025.
“We secured a record-breaking amount of offshore wind in the last round, which will bring over £30 billion in private investment to the UK. It’s essential we continue to procure good value renewables. The last auction showed onshore wind is half the cost of new gas plants, and offshore wind is 40% cheaper,” said RenewableUK’s CEO Tara Singh, on the DESNZ statistics.
“Double the offshore capacity that won contracts in the last round is eligible to bid in this one, ensuring low bids due to high competition. We look forward to the Government’s budget announcement, hoping it maximizes low-cost power delivery, enhancing UK energy security,” she added.
