Strategic Moves in U.S. Solar Manufacturing: T1 Energy’s Investment in Talon PV

In a significant step towards boosting domestic solar production, T1 Energy Inc. has invested in Talon PV LLC, acquiring a minority stake in the solar technology company. Talon is advancing a 4.8 GW solar cell manufacturing facility in Baytown, Texas, while T1 Energy develops its 5 GW G2_Austin solar cell plant in Rockdale, Texas, with expected operations to commence in late 2026.

These Texas-based initiatives are part of a broader push to enhance U.S. solar manufacturing capabilities using state-of-the-art technology for high-efficiency solar cells. This aligns with national objectives to fortify the U.S. clean energy supply and minimize reliance on international imports.

T1 Energy’s investment represents a pivotal example of domestic energy growth spurred by President Trump’s OBBBA initiative and 45x tax credits. Both projects aim to create new manufacturing jobs in Texas, addressing the rising energy demands fueled by AI, industrial growth, and increased residential electrification.

Both facilities will focus on manufacturing TOPCon solar cells, utilizing quantum tunneling technology—a recent Nobel Prize-winning scientific advancement. These advanced cells are among the most efficient globally, highlighting the companies’ dedication to innovation. Under the investment terms, T1 Energy has secured its stake in Talon through a Simple Agreement for Future Equity (SAFE), with plans to explore further strategic collaboration.

“We are excited by the opportunity to invest in another American solar energy project that complements our G2_Austin development,” stated Daniel Barcelo, CEO and Chairman of T1 Energy. “Expanding the production of American-made solar cells is essential for achieving energy security, regulatory compliance, and the creation of a sustainable solar manufacturing industry built on advanced technologies.”

Currently, T1 Energy operates the 5 GW G1_Dallas solar module facility in Wilmer, Texas, and has established a long-term agreement with Corning Inc. for sourcing polysilicon and solar wafers from Michigan, reinforcing a robust domestic solar supply chain.

Adam Tesanovich, co-founder and CEO of Talon, remarked, “Our partnership with T1 Energy strengthens the foundation of U.S. solar manufacturing. Together, we’re developing scalable, non-FEOC supply chains that deliver true domestic content and enhance America’s energy independence and national security.”

Talon PV LLC, a private U.S.-based company, is set to launch its 4.8 GW TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility by early 2027. The company is primarily owned by Eagle Group, an industrial enterprise with a focus on advancing American energy production.
