The collaboration between technical colleges and energy companies in South Dakota has established a direct pipeline for training and employing a skilled workforce. Institutions like Mitchell Tech and Lake Area Tech have emerged as pivotal players in this arena, offering specialized programs that produce highly sought-after graduates.
Mitchell Tech, unique in offering a dedicated wind energy major, has been a stepping stone for many, including Pearson, a Vermillion high school graduate. “When I came to the wind energy program, I thought, ‘Well, that sounds kind of cool,’” Pearson, now 28, reflected on his journey, which began with a Build Dakota Scholarship that covered his tuition.
The scholarship program, alongside partnerships with employers and the state, has significantly contributed to addressing workforce shortages in the renewable energy sector. Pearson’s career trajectory is a testament to the potential in this field; starting with a salary of $80,000, his earnings have surged to $127,000, with additional benefits.
With a growing family, Pearson now returns to Mitchell Tech, not as a student, but as the sole instructor for its wind energy program. “There’s been a steady uptick in the need for workforce,” he noted, emphasizing the high demand for skilled workers at job sites.
Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration reveals that 77% of South Dakota’s power is derived from non-fossil fuel sources, predominantly wind and water. Over the past 15 years, the state has experienced a remarkable tenfold increase in wind energy production.
Chris Nelson, a commissioner with the state Public Utilities Commission, highlighted this growth: “We’ve had just a tremendous expansion of wind energy in South Dakota.” Currently, the state boasts 1,417 turbines generating approximately 3,600 megawatts of energy. Despite this progress, a lack of transmission infrastructure is slowing further expansion.
Efforts to enhance transmission capacity are underway, with two nonprofit energy consortiums planning a $37 billion investment over the next decade to bolster the power grid in the upper Midwest, including South Dakota.
At Lake Area Technical College, students like Nathaniel Bekaert benefit from targeted energy programs. After serving in the U.S. Army, Bekaert pursued an energy degree, funded largely by military benefits. He has since secured a position as a wind technician, earning $29 an hour with additional signing bonuses.
Tiffany Sanderson, president of Lake Area Tech, noted the promising prospects for graduates, with starting salaries around $65,000 to $69,000 in energy technology and operations. The college’s engagement with local schools aims to inspire future generations to pursue careers in energy.
Mitchell Tech has adapted its curriculum to meet industry demands, now offering a one-year wind energy degree and dual-enrollment options for high school students.
Marmen Energy, a significant player in South Dakota’s renewable sector, underscores the importance of educational partnerships. Aimee Miritello, the human resources manager, emphasized these relationships as crucial for recruiting qualified employees. Marmen’s expansion reflects the increasing demand for wind towers, bolstering both employment and innovation in the region.
