‘Secure Transition’: Security Major Topic at Offshore Energy Event in Amsterdam

The Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference (OEEC) in Amsterdam on November 26 and 27 focused on safeguarding offshore energy infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity, and advancing clean energy projects.

Seabed security was a key topic at OEEC, with Paul Flos from the Dutch Ministry of Defense sharing insights on military perspectives. Flos emphasized the critical role of the offshore energy supply chain in protecting subsea infrastructure, highlighting the need for collaboration with NATO and civilian industries.

During a session on supply chain challenges, Flos noted that security perspectives need updating to reflect current realities. He stated the importance of mental flexibility to enhance energy capacity and protect existing resources.

The conference also discussed Ukraine’s wind energy sector, emphasizing how offshore wind turbines increase energy security during conflicts. Galyna Shmidt of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association explained that targeting multiple turbines is complex and costly, thus supporting energy transition and security.

UWEA signed a Memorandum of Partnership with Dutch clean energy organization NedZero during OEEC 2024. This partnership aims to bolster collaboration in clean energy initiatives.

The Dutch Government, through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), highlighted upcoming offshore wind tenders that will include cybersecurity requirements. Eva de Leede from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs advised developers to diversify supplier portfolios in anticipation of these new regulations.

The event addressed the feasibility of meeting renewable energy targets for 2030 and 2050, given current supply chain constraints. While concerns about capacity persist, industry innovation and agility offer hope for achieving net-zero goals.

Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference 2025 (OEEC 2025) is scheduled for November 25 and 26 in RAI Amsterdam.
