Randolph County is set to benefit from a significant boost in renewable energy and economic development with the expansion of the Riverstart Solar Park, adding another 100 MW to its capacity.

WINCHESTER, Ind., April 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — EDP Renewables North America LLC (EDPR NA) has officially launched Riverstart III Solar Park, a project that brings an additional 100 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to Randolph County, Indiana. This development enhances local energy resilience and supports the community’s economy. Amazon has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the entire 100 MW to support its Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and align its energy use with renewable sources.

EDPR NA’s influence in Indiana is notable, with 11 phases across four projects totaling 1,702 MW, cementing its position as the leading renewable energy owner and operator in the state. Nationwide, EDPR NA ranks among the top five in the renewable energy sector.

The new phase at Riverstart will generate power comparable to the usage of over 19,200 homes in Indiana. It promises an economic uplift by channeling an estimated $32.8 million to local governmental bodies through taxes, supporting vital community initiatives. Additionally, around $2.9 million is expected to be injected into local businesses over the project’s duration.

Construction of Riverstart III has already created over 350 jobs, with more opportunities anticipated during its operational phase. The project will also benefit landowners and farmers, who will receive $28 million in land lease payments, aiding them financially in challenging agricultural conditions. Environmental considerations have been integrated into the project’s development, with pollinator-friendly practices being adopted.

EDPR NA’s projects account for nearly 30% of Indiana’s wind, solar, and storage capacity. Since 2009, these endeavors have contributed a cumulative $226.2 million in economic impact, including $35.3 million in taxes and $90.6 million to landowners. More than 1,820 construction jobs and over 90 permanent positions have been generated.

“The continued growth of our portfolio in Indiana with the launch of this newest phase of Riverstart Solar is yet another example of the significant contribution that renewables and solar play to serve the Hoosier State’s growing energy needs,” stated Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO, EDP Renewables North America. “As the largest owner and operator of renewables in the state, we are grateful to Randolph County for our continued partnership focused on delivering economic and community benefits that have resulted in a positive track record.”

Since 2014, EDPR NA has been actively contributing to the community in Randolph County, supporting local initiatives such as youth sports, the 4-H Fairs, and economic development events. Their cornerstone contributions include a $100,000 donation to the Randolph County Fairgrounds and the establishment of the Union Township Endowment Fund, committing $360,000 over 15 years for community projects.

EDPR NA’s impact in Indiana is marked by its operation of 1.7 GW of generating capacity from projects including the Headwaters Wind Farm, Meadow Lake Wind Farm, Riverstart Solar Park, and Sweet Acres Wind Farm.
