Porsche Taycan’s Future in Question as Production End Nears
Porsche’s foray into the electric vehicle market with the Taycan may soon come to an end, according to reports from Germany. While the automobile manufacturer has made strides with its electric model, a new report suggests production might cease by 2030, despite recent comments from Porsche’s CEO assuring the model’s continuation.
The Taycan marked Porsche’s entry into the electric vehicle scene when it was first unveiled in 2019. Over the years, it has expanded into various variants and set multiple performance records. However, initial sales have dwindled over time, potentially prompting strategic changes.
The introduction of new electric models like the Macan EV, which has been selling exceptionally well, might be diverting interest away from the Taycan. Additionally, the trend towards larger vehicles, such as SUVs, has shifted consumer demand away from sport sedans.
Porsche has attempted to rejuvenate interest in the Taycan with new variants and updates, like the upcoming 2027 E-shift feature, designed to simulate the experience of driving a manual transmission vehicle. Despite these efforts, rumors of insufficient sales have persisted. Yet, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters had recently stated, “We do not plan to discontinue the Taycan in the short term. We have invested a lot in the model and want to observe how demand develops.”
However, WirtschaftsWoche, a German media outlet, reports a tentative agreement between Porsche’s works council and management to phase out Taycan production by 2030, though the decision remains unofficial. Other options, such as relocating production, were considered but ultimately set aside.
Inquiries to Porsche for comments on these reports were met without response. This potential production halt contrasts with Leiters’ earlier statements and occurs alongside renewed interest in other models like the 718 EV, which will share its platform with Audi’s TT. The Taycan shares its platform with the Audi e-tron GT, raising questions about the latter’s future should Taycan production cease.
